I'm updating now because my English class is cancelled. A few of the professors are taking pity on the kids who waited on the longest ballot line in the history of the country (no joke). Walking back from the class I saw a lot of kids in tears, most dressed in all black after hearing Kerry conceded this morning. Through the walls I hear Rob playing the Empire theme from Star Wars out of his window continuously. There's more Kerry/Edwards signs adorning the windows and doors of students now than there ever were before yesterday.
Is it all necessary? I don't think so. I waited for 10 hours on line to vote, saying hi to ABCNews, CBS, and at least one documentarian. I was still up to go to class even after hearing my vote was in vain. The mourning shtick is precious, and all too unpatriotic for me. To consider the nation dead does not install much faith in the resilience of its people. Kerry would've made a better president. The Cons would have butchered his power in Iraq for 2008, but he's the kind of man who works better under pressure (I voted Republican in the Senate for this reason). He would've dragged us out of the deficit and renewed our respect among foreign nations. It seems to me that the presidency would regain its respect in pop culture as well (Kerry is not as easily parodied as the current president). Still not big on them there gays though.
But what is there to mourning? To think the nation's problems would be resolved because Bush was gone is fantastic and wrong. Bush has no excuse now if and when he fucks up. He'll have had two terms to play the "business-cycle" card with the economy's woes, which people have a lot of trouble buying now. Social Security reform will be another snake slinking through his garden, in addition to the horrors of his war on terror. But the nation gets the chance to witness his abilities as a president now. We can't spite him for suceeding. When he does, it will be better for the nation, not simply the GOP. Partisanship has a tricky way of making people forget that the POTUS is governing everyone. If he's as dumb as we've been forced to believe, it will show and liberals will have that brief moment of vindication on which to fall back. If he's been underestimated, the nation and hopefully the world will benefit. This is still the best nation in the world, and the best in the history of the world. Leave it if you have to, but I think it's in your interest to change it with that same impetus if you feel it's necessary.
In other news, San Andreas is the game God would play if He wasn't an XBoxer. Or, busy making Daredevil 3 with Ben Affleck.
Halloween was sweet. I was Amish.
