Zoologger: Horror fly returns from the dead

"a mythical beast, not seen for more than 160 years. A nocturnal animal that feeds on the rotten flesh of large mammals. A species active only during the winter months that reportedly emits a luminous glow from its large, orange head. What new horror is this?

In Crater Lake in Oregon there is a large stump of wood that has been floating in the lake for over 100 years. It has been bleached white by the elements and is large enough and bouyant enough to support a grown man.

I saw this picture and it made me go WTF!!
I know this is a dead frog...what i don't know are the round black things that are on it.
Can anyone explain, I'm from california I've never seen...any type of carnivorous insect like the one that SEEMS to be eating the frog.
