Guys, I love you, and it's a fascinating subject, but please try to remember that this is supposed to be a mostly scientific and objective forum. Of course we poke fun at everything (ex: this baby, rare diseases, other awful things that aren't that funny irl), but this is also not a political forum. This post is about a specific case of a congenital disorder. Anophthalmia is caused by random mutation in the baby's DNA and is not inherited. Teen Pregnancy has nothing to do with it. While it is certainly reasonable to discuss the baby's parents, it should be noted that the sex ed of America, the mother's social caliber and age, as well as the tax system, really have nothing to do with this. Please be courteous. Our mods are getting fed up.
Or as
blasphemusfish so eloquently put it, "Firstly if I see another 'DEY TUK URR TAXESS HURP A DURRRR' comment, I will seriously not be impressed."
Baby Born Without Eyes
Brielle Garrison will need several surgeries after being born with anophthalmia.
UN-CITED SYNOPSIS:
Taylor Garrison had Brielle Garrison on Feb. 1, 2010. She's brand freakin new to the world, so there aren't very many pictures. The tiny nubs, as discovered by this forum, are peg ocular conformers and will allow her to have prosthetic eyes one day.
These things remain constant: it' sort of freaky, this poor baby can't see, and she has little things coming out of her eyes. Otherwise, she's adorable.
Thanks to the dedicated folks in
this thread, we now know what the eye nubs are!
finchwench: They are apparently
peg ocular conformers. This is the first step in
fitting a patient with orbital expanders for ocular prostheses.
THE RUNDOWN:
The nubs are just little handles for easy removal of the ocular conformers. The ocular conformers are in there to make space for 'glass eyes.' My understanding is that it's a graduated system, starting with something like what Brielle is seen with and ending in a full prosthetic eye.
With this we say goodbye to the snail eye and drainage tube theories. )': I will miss thinking she has little eye nubs.
The former theories:
1)EYE NUBS- I reported them as such because that's what I thought they were.
2)DRAINAGE TUBES-
kaptnjack came up with this in
this post. "the eye tubes look like plastic. maybe the doctors put them there for drainage or something? i don't know, but anophthalmia doesn't typically come with eye tubes as far as i know"
Helpful Scientific Websites:
MAPS- Prosthetics and Ocularists This is a really great site with all the information you need to understand Brielle's eye nubs!
A practical guide to the management of anophthalmia and microphthalmia This is a little blurb from a paper about how to treat these disorders. You have to pay for the whole article, but the blurb is pretty informative. [If you're interested in this article see

BREAKING NEWS:
I looked in to it and found
this article, which yielded these fabulous pictures for closer examination but no real answers!
Also,
GrowingYourBaby gave us this:
The nubs don't show up in any other picture but the first one, but the quality isn't high, and they're so tiny and pale, it's possible they just aren't showing up. Perhaps the flash washed them out. If they are eye nubs and not tube nubs, perhaps she still has a capacity to blink and they are hiding beneath her eyelids. I haven't read anything that suggests she can't blink, yet.
LET'S FIGURE THIS OUT; ARE THEY TUBES OR ARE THEY EYES? Does anyone know anything about this condition?
