CHAPTER SIX

“Not from Earth,” Kris said slowly, disbelievingly. His mother nodded. “Mama, are you feeling okay?”

“Kristopher, I told you it’d be hard for you to understand,” his mother started, “but it’s the truth. Our people came here after our home planet was destroyed in the Battle of Gemini."

“Battle of Gemini? Home planet? Ma, you can’t be serious.” Kris felt like he was going to puke. Even though rationality was telling him that his mom was loony, somewhere in his heart he knew she was right. She’d never lied to him, not really, except for this whole we’re from another planet thing. It was so hard to wrap his mind around, and yet, it wasn’t. He was so confused.

"I'm very serious," Mrs. Allen told him. "Our home was destroyed and we had to find somewhere else where we could survive. Earth was the only planet that was similar enough to ours that our people could sustain life."

“What do you mean?” Kris asked. "How was our planet destroyed? What is this Battle of Gemini? Mama, please, I need answers."

Mrs. Allen nodded. "Okay, I'll tell you our history, our real history, the place where you were conceived, where you were to be born."

Kris waited patiently for his mother to begin. He could tell that this was hard for her by the way she kept twisting her handkerchief around and around her fingers. Finally the older woman took a deep breath and looked her son in the eyes as she began to tell him a tale that no one had spoken of for over a quarter of a century.

"We lived on the planet of Creation, ruled by a very loving and kind royal family. The last king before the Battle of Gemini was King Armedius. He and his wife, the Queen, had twin sons, Erik and Eli. One was born of good intentions, the other born of greed. Because they were twins, King Armedius made a law stating that if twins were born unto the royal family, the first born would be King or Queen, and the younger would be Prince or Princess and neither could rule without the other."

"What did that mean?" Kris asked. "Neither could rule without the other?"

"Well, in this case since Eli was two minutes older than Erik, he was the heir of the throne. But he could not put laws into affect or make rulings on what was best for our Family, we were considered the Family of Creation, without Erik's consent. The twins had to be in agreement to rule their kingdom," Mrs. Allen explained. "But as I told you, one twin was born of good, the other evil. They were always against each other, very competitive. It didn't matter much until one day King Armedius died unexpectedly and his sons had to take his place."

"Most people were fine with Eli being our new ruler as he was kind and caring and so much like his father. But there were others who were upset that Erik would not get the throne. You see, boys, our Creator made us in balance, there could be no good in our world without some evil. Good and evil balance each other out, hence the good twin and the bad twin. To make a long story short, Erik began a battle to overthrow his brother, to get what he thought was rightfully his, the throne, the whole of Creation."

Kris heard Adam gasp beside him and when he looked, the older man's eyes were wide. "The Battle of Gemini!" Adam exclaimed. "The Battle of Twins!" Kris groaned inwardly. Adam and his love of astrology, he thought.

Kris' mother nodded. "You are exactly right, Adam, it was the battle between the twin rulers."

Adam grinned triumphantly and Kris shook his head in amusement. He found it ironic that his boyfriend's love of astrology actually pertained to what his mother was telling them.

Mrs. Allen continued, "Many of our people, on both sides, died. Our world was quickly dissolving into ruins. Our Creator saw this and was furious that our new rulers would do this to His Creation, to His work of art, and He banished us all from Creation. There are rumors that He rebuilt Creation, made it whole again, but we will never know for sure." She shrugged.

"But, Mama, what does this have to do with the curse of an unholy child?" Kris asked. "That's what I would like to know most about."

Mrs. Allen sighed heavily. "When the Creator banished us from our planet, he cursed the men of our people. He cursed them with the creation of life."

There was silence in the room that seemed to echo off the neutrally painted walls. "So, let me get this straight. The Creator cursed men with the creation of life because our people destroyed His creation?" Kris asked. He wanted to make sure he was understanding exactly what his mother had said.

Mrs. Allen bobbed her head. "Yes, that's the short version of it."

"But it's not... I mean... this child... it's not the devil, is it?" Kris asked, still a bit frightened because the baby came to him from a curse.

"You need to talk to Father Eli," Mrs. Allen told him. "Only the Father can tell you for sure."

"But why?"

Kris felt Adam take his hand. "Kris, Father Eli... he was the good twin, wasn't he?" Kris looked at his boyfriend to find Adam staring at his mother. Kris quickly turned his gaze back to her.

"Yes. Father Eli was our king. That's why he's still so important to us here on Earth," Mrs. Allen explained. "That is why we call him Father. He is the Father of our Sanctuary. He is the one who..." She paused. "When our people were cursed, Father Eli added the curse to our scriptures. He'll be able to tell you everything you need to know. But I'm afraid, Kristopher, that he'll make you stay."

Kris' stomach dropped to the floor. "Wh-what?"

"I'm sorry," his mom apologized. "But the Sanctuary is the only place you'll be able to get medical care while you're... with child."

"Does that mean there have been others?" Kris asked, his eyes narrowed at his mother.

She twisted her handkerchief nervously around her fingers. "I'm sorry, but I don't have all the answers. You must see Father Eli." She got to her feet, seemingly a bit wobbly. "Now, if you don't mind, I ask that you go see him right away. It's very important." Her eyes darted to the clock over the mantle. Kris followed her gaze and saw that they had been there for hours now. His father would soon be on his way back from scripture study.

Kris balled his free hand into a fist and shoved himself up from the couch cushions. "You just want me to get out before Pop comes home."

"Your father won't react kindly," Mrs. Allen murmured. She moved closer to her son and wrapped her arms around him. "It was good to see you," she said. "I'm sorry it has to end like this. I love you, Kristopher." Then she pulled away from the embrace.

Kris stared at his mother confused. "What do you mean, Mama?" he asked. "End like what?"

A tear rolled down the older woman's cheek. "Father Eli will explain." With that she ushered the two men to the door and outside onto the steps. Kris turned to look at her, but she was already closing the door in his face.
