Kris stood there, just staring at the door his mother had closed on him. He had this eerie feeling that it was for the last time. Adam tugged at Kris’ hand. “Hey, babe, you okay?” he asked softly.
Kris looked at Adam with tears in his eyes. “I really don’t think so,” he answered just as quietly. Adam gave a sharp nod of his head and led Kris out of the yard and to their awaiting rental car.
Adam helped Kris into the passenger’s seat before climbing in on the other side. “Keys?” he asked, holding out his hand. Kris reached numbly into his pocket and handed them over. “Where should I go?” Adam sounded a bit nervous to Kris, so the younger man moved closer on the bench seat and placed his hand on Adam’s thigh.
“I… I don’t know,” he murmured. “I need to see Father Eli but… I don’t think I can right now.” He looked over at Adam, who was chewing on his lower lip.
“Do you want to go back to the hotel and come back tomorrow?” Adam asked.
“Can we?” Kris sounded hopeful.
Adam nodded, carded his hand through his boyfriend’s hair. “Of course, baby,” he said softly. He leaned in and kissed Kris’ temple. “It’ll be okay,” he whispered. Kris bobbed his head a few times in agreement, not really sure if he did agree. Adam started the car and headed back the way they had came.
When they pulled up to the gate, Jerry came over to the car like earlier and Adam rolled down his window. Jerry frowned when he saw Kris. “Hey guys,” he said. “Jesus, Kris, you don’t look so good. Everything alright?”
Kris gave the guard a weak smile. “Yeah, Jer, I’m good. Just a little queasy,” he told the other man, and it wasn’t a complete lie. “Um, we’ll be back tomorrow morning to see Father Eli.”
Jerry nodded slowly, almost as if he knew why they were going to see the Father. “Well, okay. You boys have a safe trip and I’ll see you tomorrow.” He waved to the other guard who opened the gate and the two men drove through.
“I think he knows,” Kris said quietly.
“Doesn’t matter,” Adam replied, wrapping his arm around Kris’ shoulders. “We’re going to get through this. Together.” Kris cuddled closer to his boyfriend, rested his head against the older man’s shoulder.
“Thank you for being here,” he whispered.
Adam gave him a squeeze. “Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, babe.”
About an hour and a half later Kris and Adam were entering their hotel room. Kris walked straight to the bed and promptly flopped back onto the mattress. After toeing off his boots, Adam made his way over to the bed and laid down beside Kris, his head propped in his hand. “How are you feeling now?” he asked, his hand moving in soothing circles over his boyfriend’s chest.
Kris reached down and gripped Adam’s hand tightly, holding their hands over his heart. “Kinda… numb… and nauseous,” he answered. He turned his head in Adam’s direction. “How about you? I mean, you just learned your boyfriend of four months is a legit alien.”
Adam chuckled lightly making Kris frown. “Sorry,” Adam apologized, “but this is just… it’s so surreal. First I find out that there’s another race of people from another planet living on Earth, then I find out my boyfriend is one of them and that I’ve knocked him up. It’s a lot to take in.” His expression turned thoughtful for a moment before he spoke again. “Thing is, Kris, I really don’t care.”
“What do you mean?” Kris asked slowly, his defenses going up.
“I just mean… I don’t care that you’re from another planet. I just know I’ve never loved anyone the way that I love you,” Adam explained. “No one has ever made me as happy or feel as loved as you make me feel. I could care less, even if you had three heads. But to be completely honest about this pregnancy thing-” Kris groaned and slung his arm over his face. Adam chuckled and tugged at Kris’ arm. “Don’t be like that. It’s not bad. I promise.” Kris slowly came out from hiding, but kept himself at the ready for whatever horrible thing Adam was about to say, because really, what could he say about this situation that would be good?
Adam smiled gently, untangled his hand from Kris’ and stroked the younger man’s cheek. “What I was trying to tell you is that, I think you being pregnant is kind of awesome.”
Kris’ jaw dropped. “You do?”
Adam nodded. “Yeah, I do. I mean, how many gay couples can say their baby is biologically both of theirs? This has to be the coolest thing ever.” Adam was grinning from ear to ear. “We’re lucky, Kris,” he said quietly.
“But, Adam, you don’t know that,” Kris protested. “For all we know this… this… thing inside me could be freaky looking, could be green or blue or fucking rainbow stripes!” Adam continued to grin as Kris freaked out. “What are you smiling about?” Kris asked.
Adam shook his head in amusement. “You,” he answered. “Do you think that I won’t be able to love our child if it looks weird?”
“But, Adam,” Kris whined. “If it looks like a real alien…” His bottom lip began to tremble and his eyes filled with tears. “If it looks like an alien then we won’t be able to… to… have a real family. We’ll have to hide it from everyone.” A tear slipped down Kris’ cheek and Adam leaned forward to catch it on his lips.
“Don’t care,” he replied. “It’ll be ours and that’s all that matters. Besides, we can tell Cale about it. I mean, he has a right to know about your history, it’s his history too.” Kris nodded. It was Cale’s history and it would be nice to be able to tell his best friend what he was going through.
Kris sighed. “Well, I’m definitely going to tell Cale about this, about everything because you’re right, he has a right to know all this."
Adam smiled softly. “You don’t have to go through this alone. You’ve got your two best guys for support.”
Kris gave his boyfriend a weak smile. “Yeah, I guess I do.” There was a moment of silence. “It’d be nice if this baby came out normal,” Kris said unexpectedly.
Adam laughed. “Why would you think otherwise?” Kris looked at him confused. “I mean, Kris, look at you and the rest of your people. You’re from another planet and you all look very much human. Why wouldn’t our baby look the same?”
“Uh, because it’s a curse, duh!”
Adam rolled his eyes. “Okay, maybe you have a tiny point. But I doubt the Creator would be that mean from what your mother told us about him. I mean, he was all about peace and love, right?”
Kris frowned in thought. “I guess it sounded that way.”
“So I’m guessing the only part of the curse is the giving life part, not the ‘unholy child’ part. I’m sure our baby will be a gorgeous, interplanetary, human-looking infant.”
Kris clutched at his belly as he laughed. “Gorgeous, interplanetary, human-looking infant?!” he squawked. “What the… how the… what even?!”
Adam grinned. “You like that, don’t cha?” Kris nodded, still bursting with giggles. “I’m glad I could make you laugh, baby. You were starting to worry me.”
Kris turned on his side, instantly sobering at the thought that he’d been worrying his boyfriend. “I’m sorry, Addie,” he murmured. “I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Adam replied and ran his hand through Kris’ hair. Kris moved closer, pressed the length of his body to Adam’s and tucked his head under the older man’s chin. Kris held on tightly to his boyfriend and nuzzled Adam’s collarbone when he wrapped his arms around Kris. “Are you okay now?” Adam asked quietly.
Kris nodded. “Yeah, I think so. I mean, ya know, under the circumstances.”
“Yes, under the circumstances,” Adam agreed. “But speaking of circumstances… how are you feeling about everything? Are you still really freaked out?”
“I… I really don’t know,” Kris murmured. “I mean, how would you feel if you were me?”
“First of all, I don’t bottom,” Adam told him.
Kris poked him in the ribs. “Come on now, no joking.”
“Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood.” Adam paused. “But really, it’s… it’d be a lot for me to take in. But I think in the end I’d just have to accept it. I mean, there’s no changing who you are. It’s like being gay... you don’t choose it.”
Kris sighed deeply. “You make a very good point. So maybe I should just accept it like I accepted my sexuality and just… be done with it.”
“That would be the easiest thing to do.”
Silence enveloped the room for a moment. “Adam,” Kris whispered.
“Hm?”
“What if… what if I can’t have this baby?” Kris felt Adam tense up at his words.
“Are you saying you want Father Eli to give you an abortion?” Adam asked.
Kris jerked back from Adam as he exclaimed, “God no! Not in a million years!” Then in a more normal voice he said, “I meant, what if Father Eli says I can’t have it? He knows things we don’t, what if for some reason I have to have an abortion? Like, it’s medically necessary or something?”
Adam pulled Kris back to his chest and squeezed him tightly. “Then we’ll deal with it,” he murmured, rubbing his cheek against the top of Kris’ head. “We’ll mourn the loss of our child and we’ll try our best to move forward.”
“I really want to have your baby,” Kris whispered.
Adam kissed his head lightly. “Me too.”
