ITEM! any glasto mavens reading might like to check out the following piece by my luvly better half, "glastonbury - not as goob as it used to be?" - & i'm sure any gomments wld be v.grapefully received, ta

ITEM! the mighty
giddyoldgoat "tagged" me to do this 'un: "List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to."

this = quite exciting for me as i'd never been "tagged" before ( our cats have been microchipped but getting a "tag" makes me feel as tho i've just come out of a young offenders institution )

the tune that's mostly "shaping my spring" gurrently seems to be bianca ( & the rest of the "jackson five" ) singing "oh baby give me one more chance" in that eastenders promo - but i doubt if that "counts"

i'm hardly at the gutting edge of music at the best of times but this year i've been especially looking backwards ( nostalgia = a gomfort food equivalent ) - anyway, here are my magnificent seven ( all oldies )

1. samson & the warden by loudon wainwright iii - "once i got locked up in a dirty old jail - & the coffee was cold - & the cornbread was stale - & i didn't cry - i tried to be brave - til the warden tried to give me a haircut & a shave - warden you can hold me for a year in your jail - but don't shave off my beard - don't cut my ponytail" .

( thus 'un makes me think abt my friend steve who died in feb - & blub )

2. necromancer by gnarls barkley - "it's naughty - very naughty - necrophilia - without a care - i'm compassionate about killing her - i'd have my way w/what's left of the will in her - cosmopolitans & cocaine - & the occasional pill in her"

( gonversely, this sick ole song makes me laff - gnarls barkley have got a new album out now - so, of gourse i'm still listening to the old 'un - typical )

3. peace train by 10,000 maniacs - "now i've been happy lately - thinking abt the goob things to come - & i believe it could be - something goob has begun"

( v.soppy i know - i heard the cat stevens original on the radio the other day - & scuttled off to hear the natalie merchant version from "in my tribe" - there are probly 10,000 better maniacs songs but i just like her voice on this 'un )

4. the book of right-on by joanna newsom - "i killed my dinner with karate - kick 'em in the face - taste the body - shallow work - is the work that I do"

( another great voice with the addition of excellent lyrics & memorable tune - & here she is doing it live )

5. duel by propaganda - "the first cut won't hurt at all - the second only makes you wonder - the third will have you on your KNEES..."

( - it's the way she says "knees" towards the end of the song that gets me -
drivo mentioned on jellytown that propaganda were ole faves of
stickismyfriend - & indeed i went to see 'em w/him at the hammersmith odeon in the olden days - this 'un still gets played quite a lot on radio 2 - but not the "heavy" version on the bside, unfortunately )

6. he cried by morrissey - "the people where i come from - they survive without feelings or blood - i never could - was stoned to death - but still living - so he froze where he stood - & he looked - & he looked - to the ground - & he cried - he cried"

( gotta have a bit of mozza at the shareholders meeting - glug glug glug - one of the three great songs on the oft slagged off maladjusted album - the others being trouble loves me & satan rejected my soul )

7. the body of an american by the pogues - "& fifteen minutes later - we had our first taste of whisky - there was uncles giving lectures - on ancient irish history - the men all started telling jokes - & the women they got frisky - at five o'clock in the evening - every bastard there was pissedky"

( - dare i mention john dos passos...? - it's even better live than it is on rum, sodomy & the lash )

now i'm sposed to "tag" seven ppl to list the seven songs "shaping their spring", so here goes:
barrysarll,
friedslice,
lairdofdarkness,
mrs_leroy_brown,
mittelstadt,
mondaylast &
totnesmartin - gonsider yrselves well & truly tagged ( - tho i won't be offended if you'd rather not join in, are too busy packing for yr holidays or whatever )

memes, gnarls barkley, glastonbury
