Geekboard Confessional

I've had a substantial hole in my geek-cred for some time now: I hadn't seen Firefly. I didn't even have a good reason why not -- I like Joss Whedon's writing, and it wasn't like there was a 40-year backstory that I had to absorb first. One season, one movie, there you go. I'd seen an episode years ago, and hadn't been terribly impressed, but that wasn't really a reason to avoid it. I was just watching other stuff. I knew I'd get around to it eventually. Well, "eventually" started last night. Enough of the things on my Netflix queue were "Long Wait" that the first disk of Firefly bubbled to the top, rather unexpectedly, and after ignoring it for a week, I watched the two-hour pilot last night (which I've since learned aired at the end of the TV series). It's good stuff, as I expected, and I'll happily watch the rest of the series. At least now I'll be able to get the "You can't take the sky from me" references.

So I got to thinking about other holes in my geek cred, and I thought I'd get them out in the open now, just to make myself feel better:
  • TV: Well, Firefly was the big hole, but, um...I've also never seen Stargate, the series.
  • Movies: I've never seen Aliens. I saw the original Alien, but on TV, so that probably doesn't count. Just never had any interest in the sequels.
  • Literature: I've never ready any novels by John Scalzi. I read one of his short stories in a Year's Best Sci-Fi collection, and I think I tried one of the "Old Man's War" novels, but I couldn't get into it. I should probably try again sometime.
  • Anime: Anime is my geek Achilles Heel; I've barely seen any. I've seen Akira, though, so I do have the very basics covered. I've never seen any Robotech, though; not even one moment of it.
  • Comics: Well...I've never read Y: The Last Man?
  • Gaming: I never played any version of Warcraft, not really. Starcraft either, for that matter. I borrowed the original Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans from Shiny back when it came out, played it for a couple of hours, and decided I didn't like it.
Whew! I feel better getting all that out. Feel free to confess your own guilty geek omissions; we won't judge you for it (much).

firefly, geekery
