I've had a substantial hole in my geek-cred for some time now: I hadn't seen Firefly. I didn't even have a good reason why not -- I like Joss Whedon's writing, and it wasn't like there was a 40-year backstory that I had to absorb first. One season, one movie, there you go. Really, all I care to remember about anime is that the appropriate response to "TETSUOOOO!" is "KANEDAAAAAA!"

Anime geeking is its own beast.

I've devoured Scalzi in the past year. The only one I thought was really weak was Zoe's Tale, a piece that proves that Hugo nomination is based so much on name.

And go for Y: The Last Man.

I haven't even seen Akira. I try to convince myself I've got an open mind where anime is concerned, but the truth is - I think the character design for most of it is ugly and if Final Fantasy games are any indication (and they seem to be from what I hear) there's too much mishmashed metaphysical mumbo jumbo that, to me, seems like so many dei ex machina. So while I would still love to be so floored by a trailer for an anime that I just have to see it, I don't really expect that to happen.
