Summary: Hermione makes an error while working on the potion.
In the few weeks that had passed since she had taken over Professor Snape’s research, Hermione had been burning the candle at both ends. In between preparations for her NEWTs, her duties as Head Girl, and keeping Ron and Harry out of trouble, Hermione found herself swamped. The added task of researching the potion found in Dumbledore’s office only made things harder for her, but she refused to fail Professor McCongall, who had taken over both Hogwarts and the Order, as well as maintaining her duties as Head of Gryffindor. Hermione felt that if Professor McCongall could work at so many delicate tasks, then she could as well. If it had been possible, Hermione would have used the time turner to gain a few hours of sleep, but she couldn’t find it in herself to abuse the magical device or Professor McCongall’s trust in her. That refusal combined with her exhausting schedule was the reason why she had fallen asleep on her work in the cramped laboratory that she had taken to working in.

Hermione woke with a start when Dobby gently tugged at her robes; she looked around the potions lab in a panic since she had fallen asleep while analyzing the properties of the potion. Her eyes suddenly caught sight of the house elf timidly hopping from foot to foot. No doubt the Head Mistress had sent him to Hermione to ensure that she didn’t miss her classes, which could arouse suspicion. In her haste, Hermione quickly stuffed her notes and books from the tabletop into her satchel as Dobby stepped away from her. As she reached for the last book, she accidentally knocked the flask containing the potion off of the table. Both witch and house elf watched in horror as the flask fell off of the table and bounced on the floor before it smashed, spilling it’s contents onto the stone floor.
”Oh no!” Hermione exclaimed as she jumped off of her stool.
Dobby started to back away as he trembled in fear and his eyes widened, and although Hermione wanted to comfort him, since Professor Snape had been harsh towards the house elves in the lab, she had to restore the potion before any more damage was done. Hermione decided to use the time turner to fix the problem and she was in the process of turning the device as she was moving away from where she was sitting. Without realizing it, she stepped into some of the potion, which caused Dobby to emit a high-pitched squeal of distress. Hermione paused to look at the elf as he rushed at her, causing her to slip into the potion. As she hit the stone floor, Hermione felt the delicate magical instrument breaking before she lost consciousness as her head made contact with the floor.

Snape sneered at Minerva McCongall as she told him the ridiculous story that Hermione Granger, the Gryffindor know-it-all, had disappeared while working on a potion found in Dumbledore’s private lab. He couldn’t believe that Minerva had come to when it could ruin everything that the Order had worked for.
“And what would you like me to do about it, Minerva?” Snape curtly asked as he crossed his arms aver his chest.
“I need to find a way to discover where Hermione is.”
”It was completely foolish of you to have had a student researching an unknown potion. Especially one you found in Albus’ chambers.”
”Well I couldn’t ask you to research it, now could I?” McCongall sharply replied.
”Yet you have no qualms about asking me now.”
”What do you think the Dark Lord will do if he discovers that she is missing, Severus?”
“Still you’re requesting that I jeopardize everything that I have worked for, all that the Order has worked for, and even what Albus sacrificed his life for so that I can rectify a foolish error.”
”Yes, Severus I am because I believe that if the Dark Lord discovers that Hermione is missing, he will attempt to rectify the situation himself and that alone will do more than threaten to jeopardize the Order’s work. We need Hermione Granger and you certainly know this. Now Severus, I am asking you for once and for all to prove your loyalty to the Order by ceasing this grandstanding and start helping me to discover where Hermione,” McCongall demanded.
“Of course, I will,” Snape silkily replied.
