Yes. Your IP address is the address of your modem. If you bring your computer to someone else's house, you take on THEIR IP address.
BUT! If a criminal investigation or some investigation of the goverment goes on, then you're able to track youd own to your actual personal IP address.
Say your IP address is... Ummm... 55. And you're at your house, which is... 90. Your IP is 90 on the web. Then you go to your friend's house which is 148. Your IP is now 148.
BUT. Again. Like I said. If someone wants to track you all the way down, they can find out that computer #55 was used on modem #90.
DONE! :D
Also, when you set up a modem for the first time, it gets assigned that IP address, so it can change, but is a pain in the butt. Your personal computer IP doesn't change no matter what. It's been registered through the company you bought your computer from.
Done again. :) ~Sammy-Joe
P.S I learned all this from my boyfriend, so if you have any questions, ask me and I'm sure Mike'll know the answer. :)
The reason I was asking is because today I have been logged out several times. Even when I click the option to stay logged in and Bind my to my IP address. When I go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/logins.bml I find that all the numbers are different for every time that I logged in. The very first 3 numbers remain the same but not the rest.
To throw more confusion in, my ISP told me that as I was on dial up, I don't have the same ip address each time. They assign a different address each time I log in and keep a register of ip address and user if there is a report of abuse being followed up. This was when I had a problem with my firewall and was wqorking through it with them, and was worried about not being protected.
