Question. (To mainly my geekish friends)

Does an IP address ever change? I mean, without you personally changing your IP. Does it ever do it on it's own?

Yes. Your IP address is the address of your modem. If you bring your computer to someone else's house, you take on THEIR IP address.

BUT! If a criminal investigation or some investigation of the goverment goes on, then you're able to track youd own to your actual personal IP address.

Say your IP address is... Ummm... 55.
And you're at your house, which is... 90. Your IP is 90 on the web.
Then you go to your friend's house which is 148. Your IP is now 148.

BUT. Again. Like I said. If someone wants to track you all the way down, they can find out that computer #55 was used on modem #90.

DONE! :D

Also, when you set up a modem for the first time, it gets assigned that IP address, so it can change, but is a pain in the butt. Your personal computer IP doesn't change no matter what. It's been registered through the company you bought your computer from.

Done again. :)

P.S I learned all this from my boyfriend, so if you have any questions, ask me and I'm sure Mike'll know the answer. :)

The reason I was asking is because today I have been logged out several times. Even when I click the option to stay logged in and Bind my to my IP address. When I go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/logins.bml I find that all the numbers are different for every time that I logged in. The very first 3 numbers remain the same but not the rest.

So yeah.. little confused.

IP addresses themselves don't change, but the address that you're at can, depending on what type of internet access you have ( ... )

.... That's extremely odd. *rubs chin*

Maybe I can ask Mike if that's common...

If your Internet Provider uses DHP, then this is entirely possible. Your provider has a ranger of IP addresses they can use - and they link each one to the hardware address of your network card. But this link can be reset at any time on their side. Your hardware address stays constant, but the IP linked to it can change.

Most of the time the IP number will stay static, but they could be performing upgrades and resetting things.

I can go into a lot more detail if that's too vauge, but that's pretty much the gist of it.

The last numbers of your IP can change. It's the port. As long as the first numbers are the same, you're fine. This happens a lot if you're using dialup or even broadband.
