Question. (To mainly my geekish friends)

Does an IP address ever change? I mean, without you personally changing your IP. Does it ever do it on it's own?

IP addresses themselves don't change, but the address that you're at can, depending on what type of internet access you have.

Think of it as the difference between having your own phone line and using payphones. Suppose you had a card that allowed up unlimited use of payphones. You could call people whenever you want by walking up to any payphone and making the call. But the number you're calling from changes each time. It's not that that payphone's number changes, but that you're calling from a different payphone each time. On the other hand, if you have your own phone line, it doesn't change.

The difference with the net is that it's all fairly transparent and not many people have their own phonelines. But dial-up access and DSL access usually is like the payphones above -- you're connecting in to the internet from a different point every time, from a slightly different address. Cable tends to change less frequently, but can change from time to time. Most companies have "static IPs," meaning, their IP addresses never change.
