1. Snow day! We only got a dusting of snow, sleet, and rain, but most of it fell while the temps were slightly above 32. Tomorrow morning's temp is supposed to be 15, and that combined with the slush on hilly roads will cause some treacherous school bus routes. I'm certainly not complaining! Yes, we're overreacting compared to other places that are used to ice and snow, but we're simply not equipped for it. We don't have a fleet of sand trucks and de-icers throughout the city, and why would we if we get ice storms perhaps once a year? (If we did have all those trucks, Fox News would just call it "wasteful government spending". ;) I was already planning to rant about people doing the whole "You people are ridiculous about a tiny bit of snow" that I hear each time this happens, then Jezebel called it
winter oneupsmanship. Great way to put it, though the advice about boiling water to de-ice a windshield is a very, very bad idea.
2. I've been watching the Alabama-Texas game tonight, even though I know nothing about college football. Despite my conflicted issues with the state of Texas itself, I usually root for the Longhorns in these matchups because UT (hook 'em!) was my safety if I didn't get into Trinity. But tonight I've kinda found myself going for 'Bama. Hmm. Guess ten years of living in the South has rubbed off on me. ;) And on a Roll Tide note, check out
workerbee73's post about
the similarities between fandom and college football.
3. Apropos of nothing: I really hate those new man-on-the-street commercials for T-Mobile in which the "funky artist" holds up mannequin body parts and says that she doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg. Look, I have a huge weakness for really bad puns, but that one always makes me push the mute button.
4. When winter storms meet fandom: I got a kick out of
this story about Jamie Bamber and his kids playing in the snow. Aww.
5. The good thing about having the day off is that it gives me some time to play with the latest
BSG porn battle. Not sure my writing mojo will hold up, but some of the prompts are giving me fun ideas. :)
