Taking a break from reading with writing

Looking back on the past 5 1/2 years, it's definitely become clear that if I do one thing well at all, it's learn. I'm damn good at it. Too bad I don't get paid for it (anymore). I may not have chosen the most practical of fields, but my brain is becoming very sharp and very precise in its operations despite the constant bombardment of numbing substances I throw at it. But maybe I should give them a more positive spin: the alcohol, etc. just gives those mechanisms a rest, slows them down for when they're not needed.

Unbelievably, there are only 7 weeks left in the semester. Less than two months!

Where did all this time go? Don't get me wrong, I'm more than ready to jump ship, but I have too much to do before my moment of kairos is reached.

- Two seminar projects (both now out of the abstract stage and now into the vaguely larval stage)
- Conference paper (need to go about adapting a paper from last semester into seminar format, about 1/2 way done with initial re-draft)
- Go to Conference
- Squeeze blood from a stone (get reimbursed for conference expenses)
- Organize another teaching circle meeting
- Organize portfolio grading workshop
- Grade two more sets of papers
- Grade final portfolios
- Go home for Thanksgiving (try to enjoy it, try to get work done while there)

That all seems like quite a bit. Although I do enjoy making lists like this one because it not only reminds me of what I have to accomplish, but this format implies some sort of finitude (which may or may not actually be a word). Seeing it all laid out, lets me know that there will eventually be an ending to it.

Until then, sleep will only happen about 2 nights of the week (if I'm lucky). The other nights: unrelaxed, unconscious recharging.

ramblings, school
