Over the weekend I had my first houseguest! :D Brittany came down from Brooklyn for a (much-loved) visit. Seriously, it is so exciting to be on the same coast as her and within easy travel distance. We've spent the majority of the last few years on opposite coasts or in different countries.

On Saturday, we ventured into Silver Spring to see Becoming Jane. I liked the movie well enough, but not as much as I was expecting from other people's reactions. Still, it was fun. After all, it had pretty English countryside, pretty costumes, pretty British accents, and pretty men. XD

On our way to the theatre, however, we made a delightful discovery: a bakery called Cakelove. So much tasty! Besides having a bunch of scrumptious-looking cakes, they also have cupcakes. They are mostly just chocolate or vanilla cupcakes, but they have lots of different flavours of frosting. We got four cupcakes, so we could have two each, but we split them all in half so we could each try four flavours. We got a vanilla with lime frosting, a yellow with chocolate frosting, a chocolate with raspberry frosting, and a vanilla with strawberry frosting. The strawberry was the best; it had flecks of strawberry chunks in the frosting and it was oh-so-tasty. AND they had to go and give me a Cakelove card, where if you get 10 stamps you get a $5 gift certificate. As I said to Brittany, I suspect that this was a bad (albeit tasty) discovery for me to make. At least it's not just right round the corner and requires more effort to get to.

After the movie, we went to dinner at the Lebanese Taverna Cafe and had a chicken kabob platter and some falafels, which were quite good. While we were in there, a lightning storm started up and lasted most of the rest of the night. No thunder, though, and only a little rain. Then we came back to the house, had tea and polished off the rest of the cupcakes and talked. Quite a lovely day. :)

On Sunday, we hiked to the Atlanta Bakery for yummy cherry croissants before heading into the city to wander through a couple art galleries. We went to the Freer and Sackler galleries, which are smaller galleries located behind the Smithsonian Castle and which contain a small but pretty collection of Asian art. Then we went back to Chinatown for an early dinner before Brittany had to take the bus back (and I myself had to dash to the Metro so I wouldn't miss the last bus to my neighbourhood, since the weekend bus schedules are a bit vexing).

Then yesterday I had my college orientation. I think there were about 30 of us there, but I don't know how many new students there actually are since we were just the ones who couldn't make it to the bigger orientation in April. Still, they seem a nice bunch of people. The faculty who were there also seem nice and interesting. I got to see one of my profs and he seems interesting (and cute...). The other prof is actually from Johns Hopkins, so she wasn't at the orientation. AND I found out that the reason one of my classes doesn't have textbooks at the bookstore is because it's with one of the new profs who only arrived last week. (Evidently the Graduate School sets the dates when new profs start without consideration for them having to order textbooks or anything useful like that.)

First class on Thursday!
