My weekend was great. I think it officially started on Thursday morning when I went down to the Augustin Children's center and helped Santa hand out presents. It was fun to get a tour of the place since I've never been there except to vote and to see all of the kids little excited faces. I love how each class contains a mix of disabled and normal kids. I think its a great concept and a good way of making your child well rounded so they can get used to others that are different from them. So I expected to have fun and I expected to help out. What I didn't expect was how incredibly hard it was going to be. I don't know why but it hurt to see some of the kids who were so disabled and so small. It just didn't seem fair. They were just so innocent and it seemed like they'd been dealt a cruel hand. Of course they were oblivious and were so excited to get toys from Santa. But it kind of broke my heart. The little boy I had brought a gift for was in a wheelchair and he was so excited to play with the microphone that came with his keyboard. It was great.
I guess lately I've just been thinking about how unfair life can be. Why is it that there are evil people in this world that live for years and then innocent children or hardworking folks that are born without the ability to walk or die of cancer. It just doesn't make sense. And I know that God is sovereign and His ways aren't mine. But it still sucks.
Anyway so I volunteered there and Santa was pretty creepy but overall it was good. So then I headed to work for our annual holiday feast and had fun being social. One of the managers decided to move the happy hour that was scheduled for 4 to 2 so I made plans to leave a little early. But then I ended up having good conversations with some of my coworkers until 5:30! It was great :) Then I volunteered at CompassCare and came home.
Friday I had a half day and had decided to work from home and boy was I glad that I did! It was horrible weather. I kept myself busy in the afternoon making 6 loaves of cinnamon bread for the next day, cleaning the house and shoveling the driveway. I did half and it was hard work but I did it and I was proud. Thankfully Nate made it home and because of the weather Nate's family decided to change their plans to come early the next morning. So we chilled out at home.
Saturday Nate's family arrived and we had the big Ransom Christmas breakfast complete with some of my cinnamon bread so that was fun. Then we relaxed and watched the Muppet Christmas Carol which I had actually never seen. Then my family arrived and we opened presents. I think everyone had fun and got cool things. I know I did. I got a bunch of gardening tools that will come in handy come spring... But my two favorites were some harp music I got from my mother-in-law and this really fun long purple scarf with matching gloves I got from my sister. I love it! My mom also gave us a basket of Christmas goodies yum :D And Nate got some kinder eggs when he was in the Netherlands so we had fun devouring those. Then everyone pitched in for the dinner and despite the fact that our oven randomnly shut off everything was ready in about an hour and we were able to have a nice dinner. We sang some Christmas carols and had dessert and then my family headed home. I put in some harp music and we all relaxed and then went to bed.
Sunday morning Nate's family headed home to avoid yet another storm that was coming in. Nate and I went to church and got groceries on the way home and then did basically nothing for the rest of the day. It is probably the first day in a while when I could honestly say I had nothing to do. I'm looking forward to some more of those days coming up next week.
Tonight is our smallgroup Christmas party and Nate is home stirring my meatballs since he has the next two weeks off (lucky!). I'm excited about it. And I'm also excited about Wednesday when we'll be celebrating our Christmas and going to the Christmas eve service. Thursday we'll be heading up to my parents house and then to my uncle's for Christmas dinner and we'll probably come back sometime Friday. We don't plan to stay long but we want to see my uncle. His last test didn't come back good and the doctor wants to do a biopsy since its possible he could be out of remission. But he has refused until after the holidays. So its going to be a special Christmas.
Anyways...I braved the weather and made it in today so I should get back to work...
