Writing Wednesday: Elementals

Dec 21, 2011 23:15

I was at my grandparents' farm Monday and Tuesday, with no internet and no TV and only a few chores to do, and I spent most of the time watching Avatar: The Last Airbender DVDs on my laptop. That inspired me, naturally, to write out the details of how my elemental characters in Gloves Off use their powers. I've only done Henry and Harmony so far; Noel, Meredith, and Trevor may come next week.

Henry "charges" electrical and battery-powered devices with a jolt from his hand. How long they last depends on how much strength he puts into it, and he can go so far as to overload machines. He is able to start small fires, and sometimes larger ones if he's working with something very dry and flammable, like how lightning turns plants into brushfires. He can deliver shocks to other people, anything from a fatal electrocution to playful static, and can also influence the path and magnitude of natural lightning.

Harmony can make small objects levitate and fly short distances. She works her way up to larger ones, and even experiments with human flight when she's an adult. If she uses enough force, she can blast holes in walls and break things apart. Her control over air allows her to physically exert herself, as she is never short of breath. She cannot be strangled or suffocated. She can use air to cushion or stop the impact of anything falling, including herself and other people. She also uses her powers for smaller everyday purposes, such as drying clothes and taming hair.
