Chapter 3

Emma took one more deep breath as she was standing outside of the Bergmann residence, almost scared to ring the doorbell. She and Jenny had made arrangements to work on their report at the Bergmann’s, since there was always a lot of commotion at the Muller household, but now that Emma was there, the prospect of facing Jenny again absolutely terrified her. Sure they had seen each other at school earlier, but at school they didn’t really have to interact. They could simply avoid each other or at least not talk to each other, an option which was obviously not available now. Now they would have to interact and talk to each other and Emma had no idea how she was going to stand that much alone time with Jenny.

She finally plucked up the courage and rang the doorbell and after a moment she saw the door opening. It was Stefan who greeted her.

“Hi Emma.”

“Hi, I’m here to see Jenny. We have this school report to prepare…” She started a little hesitantly, as if hoping Stefan wouldn’t let her see Jenny or something and she would have a good excuse not to go upstairs and face her nemesis.

Unfortunately no such luck.

“Yes, yes, she mentioned something about it,” Stefan said as he stepped back from the door. “Come on in. Jenny is in her room. It’s the second one on the left.”

“Yeah, I know,” Emma smiled gently, even though she realized she really didn’t. She made her way towards the stairs. Here goes nothing, she thought as she walked up to Jenny’s door and knocked.

“Come in,” Emma heard the voice from the other side of the door and pushed it open. When she entered, Jenny was sitting on her bed reading a magazine.

“Oh, it’s you,” Jenny said casually, not really sure who she expected to see and trying to hide how deep down she was really excited to see Emma. Somehow fighting with the blonde had become one of her favorite things to do.

“Gee, you could at least try and hide your disappointment,” Emma sighed and looked straight at Jenny. “Listen, I don’t wanna be here any more that you want me here, so let’s just focus on the report and the sooner we get that done, the sooner I can be out of your hair.”

Who said I want you out of my hair? Jenny asked in her mind, but of course didn’t dare say it out loud.

“Deal,” She simply agreed and walked over to the closet to take out her laptop. She gestured for Emma to sit on the bed and she took a seat next to her.

“So…” Emma started, but suddenly she realized she was losing her ability to speak. Or form coherent sentences for that matter.

“So…” Jenny repeated what Emma had just said and looked at the blonde slightly uncomfortably. For some reason the self-confidence she had had during their little spat while cleaning the schoolyard was gone and she had no idea how to stop focusing on the way Emma smelled and start focusing on the report.

“So how do you wanna do this?” Emma asked after a moment of extremely uncomfortable silence. “Do you wanna take turns talking or do you wanna go half and half? Because half and half could be easier, but then again if we took turns neither of us would have to talk for very long, and that could be good in case we want a drink or something,” Emma realized she was now babbling, but she had to try really hard not to focus on how beautiful Jenny looked that night. She was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, and if anyone could make that outfit work, it was Jenny.

Geez, just snap out of it, Muller! Emma reprimanded herself after a moment. You hate that girl, so stop staring at her lips! Get a grip!

“I don’t really care either way,” Emma’s thoughts were interrupted by Jenny finally answering her question.  “Whichever works for you.”

“Wow, I didn’t realize you could be so conciliatory,” Emma said somewhat sarcastically. “The last few weeks all you have done is give me crap and contradict everything I say. Are you sure you’re feeling OK?” She asked smirking.

“Oh don’t get all smart on me,” Jenny replied trying really hard not to laugh. “It’s like you said, the sooner we finish, the less time we have to spend together.” Jenny pointed out and Emma nodded.

“Right,” She agreed and focused her eyes on the computer screen. Jenny did the same and as they started researching their report topic, they seemed to forget for a moment about all the crappy things they both had done to one another.

About an hour into the research, they both started to feel a little tired, so Jenny suggested they took a little break.

“How about 15 minutes to stretch a little and maybe drink something?” She proposed.

And as much as Emma hated the idea of being pulled away from the work that she seemed to be doing really well, she really could use a moment of distraction.

“Fine,” She agreed. “As long as the break doesn’t become permanent!” Emma pointed out looking meaningfully at Jenny.

“What are you looking at me like that for?” Jenny asked confused. “Like I wanna interrupt your hard core working mode!”

“I didn’t say anything!” Emma protested and she truly couldn’t figure out what the hell Jenny was going on about.

“You didn’t have to,” Jenny shrugged. “It’s the way you’re looking at me right now,” Jenny looked at her with slight reproach. “You’re not the only one who wants to get this report done fast, so don’t pretend like you’re the only one who gives a shit.”

“Geez, where do you get this stuff!?” Emma was getting more and more frustrated. “Can’t you ever just have a normal conversation? Why do you have to accuse everybody of playing dirty or the whole world of being out to get you?”

“It’s because of people like you!” Jenny shot back, never really fully realizing what she had said and how Emma might have taken it.

“What the hell is your problem with me?” Emma shouted angrily. She was furious now and she wanted Jenny to give her answers once and for all. “What did I ever do to you to make you hate me that much? Because everywhere I turn, there you are, with a new scheme or prank, just waiting to make my life miserable. Why do you insist on doing those things to me?” Emma asked desperately, trying so hard to understand the rationale behind Jenny’s actions.

“Don’t you see that I have to be that way with you?!” Jenny finally shot back, feeling that she couldn’t hold it back any longer. She noticed a totally puzzled expression on Emma’s face, but she decided to continue anyway. “I have to be mean to you, because that’s the only way I can cope…. It’s either that or…”

“Or what?” Emma asked totally lost. What the hell was Jenny trying to tell her?

“God, Emma, do I really have to spell it out for you?”

“Yes, please!” Emma insisted. She had no idea what Jenny was rambling about, but before she had a chance to think about it, she felt Jenny’s lips on hers. Again. Second time in two days.

Before Emma could process and react, Jenny came to her senses and took a step back, breaking the only point of contact between them.

“I told you not to kiss me ever again,” Emma said after a few seconds, enunciating every single word and looking at Jenny angrily. How dare she! How dare she do it again!

“Yes you did,” Jenny simply stated and continued looking at Emma intently. She was wondering what the blonde was going to do. She was expecting another rant, a slap perhaps, a fist embedded in her laptop… But she never expected what occurred next…

Emma walked up to her, took a second to look her in the eyes and then she kissed her. And not just a touch of the lips, like their previous two kisses. No. A full blown, earth-shattering kiss. She could feel Emma’s hands in her hair, on the back of her neck, on her cheeks… Emma’s body pressed tight onto Jenny’s, their tongues connected, their breathing erratic… No, it definitely wasn’t like their first two kisses. And even though Jenny was absolutely taken aback by Emma’s “attack”, her body immediately responded. No thinking, no analyzing, just feeling. Feeling the amazing warmth of Emma’s lips on hers, of Emma’s hands wandering on her body…

Jenny moaned into the kiss, enjoying the sensations overtaking her body… But before she could fully give in to the passion, the wonderful warmth got taken away when Emma suddenly broke the kiss and took a step back, absolutely terrified about what she had just done.

For a moment they kept gazing at each other both amazed and petrified at what had just happened between them. Jenny wanted nothing more than to kiss Emma again, but she was too scared to make a move. And before she could come up with anything to say, Emma turned around and started gathering her things.

“I have to go,” She informed Jenny as she grabbed the rest of her things.

“But the report…” Jenny protested, even though it wasn’t really the report she was worried about.

“I’m sorry,” Emma said quickly, never turning around, never looking at Jenny, let alone in her eyes. And before Jenny could say anything else, Emma was gone. Her heart was still racing when she was running down the stairs and she didn’t seem to be able to regain her composure.

What the hell just happened? She asked herself as she made her way to the front door. She quickly opened the door and ran out of the house. She walked quickly, energetically, in big strides, hoping that the faster she walked, the faster she would forget about what had just happened between her and Jenny Hartmann.

In the meantime, the brunette leaned against the wall of her room looking at the door through which Emma had just disappeared and tried to comprehend what the hell had just happened between her and Emma Muller.
