Chapter 4
Emma nervously looked around the hallway as she and Luzi were leaving the math class. Emma noticed that Jenny had left a few seconds before them and she was making sure the brunette was nowhere to be found when they left the classroom. To her relief, her eyes didn’t register Jenny anywhere and she was happy that she managed to get away without talking to her again. But right after Emma and Luzi made a few steps forward, Emma suddenly noticed Jenny standing on their way and she immediately stopped. She noticed Jenny looking at her intently and she tried really hard not to look at her as well. Not to get lost in those amazing eyes of hers. Not to remember the softness of her lips and the gentleness of her touch.
“Emma?” The blonde suddenly heard her friend’s voice. “Are you coming?”
“You know what…” Emma started, not really sure what she was going to say, “I think I left my book in the classroom. You go ahead and I’ll catch up.”
“OK,” Luzi replied looking at her friend slightly confused and after a moment she asked, “Are you sure you’re OK? You look kind of pale.”
“I’m fine,” Emma replied trying her best to sound convincing, but Luzi knew better. But she also knew that it wasn’t a good idea to push Emma, so once again she decided to let it go.
“OK, I’ll see you in a few,” Luzi smiled as she started walking away.
Emma turned around and made her way back to the classroom. When she entered, she stole a glance towards the hallway where Jenny was still standing talking to one of her volleyball friends. Emma sighed and took a seat at one of the desks. She covered her face with her hands and started wondering what the hell was going on with her. Why couldn’t she get Jenny out of her mind? Why couldn’t she forget the way Jenny looked, smelled, tasted and felt the previous night? And why in the world had she kissed her in the first place? Not only she hated Jenny, but most importantly, Jenny was a girl!! And Emma couldn’t figure out why in the world she felt the urge to kiss another girl! After all, she was normal, right?
She took a few moments to calm herself down and stop thinking about the prospect of having to deal with Jenny right that moment. She wasn’t ready. She had no idea what to do about this whole situation, how to act around Jenny, what to do to stop thinking about those damn dimples…
After a few moments she got up, walked up to the door looked out the classroom just to see that Jenny was no longer there. Once again Emma breathed a sigh of relief as she made her way to their next class and joined Luzi.
“You sure took your time,” Luzi commented looking at Emma meaningfully, trying to figure out what had her friend so rattled.
“I’m sorry,” Emma looked at Lucy apologetically. “I got distracted for a moment.”
“I wonder by who…” Luzi muttered, half to herself, but making sure Emma heard it.
“What was that?” The blonde asked curious.
“Nothing, nothing…” Luzi sighed and wondered how long it would take for Emma to finally admit what was the real reason she was always so angry at Jenny.
They continued talking for a while until the teacher came and the class started. Emma was relieved Jenny was not in and she remembered that the volleyball team got the last two periods off, because apparently they had an important game that afternoon. Which Emma was very grateful for, because it meant that Jenny would be busy the entire afternoon and most importantly, she would be in the gym, which meant that there was no risk of them running into each other.
When the class finished, Emma left the classroom without fear of having to face Jenny, but it soon turned out that her relief was premature. As soon as she stepped into the hallway, she noticed Jenny walking right towards her. Emma panicked. There was nowhere to hide, nowhere to run off to, no valid excuses for coming back to the classroom…
Crap! Emma thought as she realized that this time she would have to at least look at Jenny, a prospect that scared her half to death.
Jenny was closer and closer, and Emma could almost feel the warmth radiating from the brunette’s eyes. And she needed to remind herself that she hated that girl.
For a split second she thought that maybe Jenny wasn’t interested in talking to her, but when she saw the brunette gazing at her, she knew that Jenny meant business. In one last attempt to escape the brunette, Emma made a 180 and tried to climb the stairs, but Jenny was faster and blocked her way.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Jenny looked at Emma meaningfully, letting her clearly know that she didn’t appreciate the hide and seek game.
“I’m going to class,” Emma said trying very hard to appear cold and simply like she didn’t give a crap. But Jenny knew better. “And speaking of which, shouldn’t you be in practice?”
“We have a break,” Jenny explained and quickly added, “Which doesn’t even matter right now. Don’t change the subject.”
“We don’t even have a subject,” Emma laughed doing her best to remain calm.
“Why have you been avoiding me?” Jenny demanded to know.
“I haven’t been avoiding you,” Emma replied, knowing well that it was a lie. And being well aware of the fact that Jenny knew that too.
“So you locking yourself in the bathroom after first period had nothing to do with the fact that I was in the bathroom as well?” Jenny pointed out. “Or you running back into the classroom after math when you saw me in the hallway?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Emma continued to pretend she didn’t understand Jenny’s accusations. She figured it might be easier that way.
“You know damn well what I’m talking about!” Jenny almost shouted. “And you can’t avoid me forever!” Jenny looked at Emma firmly, making sure the blonde understood she was not giving up.
“First of all, I am not avoiding you. And even if I was, we live in a free country, so yeah, I can avoid you forever if I want to.”
“But do you want to?” Jenny suddenly asked, her expression a little softer, her eyes a bit hopeful. And Emma almost gave in.
Almost.
“I have to go,” She said, hurriedly making her way past Jenny and up the stairs.
“Oh come on, Emma, don’t be a baby!” Jenny called after her. “We have to talk about this!”
“No we don’t!” Emma sent Jenny an angry look and disappeared around the corner. Jenny, slightly defeated, ran her hand through her hair and started making her way towards the gym. And even though Emma managed to get away once again that day, Jenny was sure she was going to make the blonde talk to her eventually.
Before she disappeared completely, she turned around and looked at a confused Luzi, as if hoping that Emma’s friend would be able to give her some answers. But of course she didn’t and Jenny decided to stop thinking about Emma and focus on volleyball for the day.
Luzi quickly made her way up the stairs and caught up to a still nervous Emma.
“What the hell was that?” Luzi asked looking at her friend meaningfully.
“What the hell was what?” Emma asked looking at Luzi innocently, and Luzi wasn’t completely sure if she really didn’t know what she meant or if she was just playing her. With Emma both were plausible, Luzi figured.
“You and Jenny just now?” Luzi explained, just to be on the safe side. “What was that all about?”
“You know, Jenny being an ass, as always,” Emma answered shrugging her shoulders, trying really hard to appear indifferent to her exchange with Jenny a moment ago.
“Well, by the looks of it, this time she wasn’t the one being an ass,” Luzi looked at Emma trying to let her know that she knew there was something more going on between her and Jenny than Emma was letting on. “What the hell is going on with the two of you?”
“Nothing,” Emma replied coldly, praying that Luzi would just let it go.
“Right,” Luzi laughed. “’Cause Jenny chased you down the hallway in her volleyball uniform and demanded you talk to her because of nothing,” She paused for a moment and then continued, “You could at least have the decency not to lie to me,” Luzi said half seriously and half joking.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Emma finally said and looked at Luzi menacingly, making sure she knew not to ask again. But Luzi only smiled to herself as she figured that was at least progress and at least Emma was admitting there was something to talk about.

Jenny had had it with Emma! She had tried to give Emma her space, she really had, but she hoped that sooner or later Emma would come to her senses and stop acting like a baby. But she hadn’t and after yet another day of trying to chase Emma down and get her to talk, Jenny was done being nice. She was going to make Emma talk to her, whether Emma wanted it or not. Next day was going to be different, Jenny promised herself.
She woke up around 6 the next day and even though it was exceptionally early for her, she didn’t seem to be able to fall back asleep. So she got up, took a quick shower, got dressed, put on a little make up and headed downstairs where Stefan was just finishing his breakfast before work.
“Wow, you’re up pretty early today,” He greeted her with a slightly surprised smile.
“I know,” She sighed smiling back. “I just couldn’t sleep.”
“Anything wrong?” Stefan asked a little concerned.
“No,” She replied only half truthfully. There was definitely no reason to clue Stefan in as to her crush and fight (but was it really?) with Emma.
“Well then I hope you have a good day at school,” Stefan wished getting up from the table.
“Thank you,” Jenny replied as she poured herself some milk to a bowl full of cereal. She wasn’t sure she would be able to ear much, but she knew she needed to eat something, and cereal always seemed to work in situations like these.
About fifteen minutes later Jenny was finally ready to go to school. She knew she was going to be way too early for classes, but she had a plan. And it required for her to arrive to school before Emma. She wasn’t sure she needed to be there this early, but she figured that since she was already up, she might as well kill the time before classes at school.
When she arrived, there was barely anyone there. She was almost terrified at how quiet the school was this early of the morning. It was the first time she had been at school that early and she almost couldn’t believe that in a few hours it would turn into a place barely legal in terms of the allowed noise limit.
Jenny slowly made her way to a coffee machine that she knew Emma liked to make good use of before classes. She was hoping today was not going to be any different and that in about half an hour her blond friend would show up to purchase her morning dose of caffeine.
Sure enough, twenty something minutes later Emma was making her way towards her favorite coffee machine, but before she could insert coins into it, she suddenly felt an arm grab her from behind and before she registered what was going on and could react accordingly, she found herself dragged to what looked like a small room.
“What the hell…” Emma tried to ask, but before she could finish her question, she realized that she was now facing one very angry Jennifer Hartmann. For a moment she truly had no idea what was going on or what she was supposed to do. It was after a few seconds that she realized they were in a 2x2 room, which most likely was one of the school’s supply closets. “Are you crazy? What the hell is this?” Emma asked both angry and confused.
“This,” Jenny gestured around the supply closet, “is me proving to you that you can’t avoid me forever.”
“Have you lost your mind?” Emma looked at Jenny with reproach and took a deep breath. “I mean I knew you were crazy, but this is insane even for you,” Emma shook her head and tried to find the door, only to discover that Jenny was blocking it. And before Emma could react, Jenny made sure the blonde saw her lock the door and put the key in her jeans pocket.
“Oh you’ve got to be kidding me,” Emma sighed incredulously. “Do you really have a loose screw or something?”
“I might,” Jenny smirked, fully enjoying how Emma was slowly getting worked up. She was so damn cute when she was angry. Her cheeks were getting a little flushed and her eyes were getting all sparkly and Jenny had never wanted to kiss anybody more than she wanted to kiss Emma right in that supply closet. But she knew it was not the time and they had more important things to do. Well, maybe not more important, but things they had to get out of the way before she could taste Emma’s sweet lips again. “But at least I don’t run around kissing people and then refusing to talk to them,” Jenny looked at Emma meaningfully and she noticed that she hit a nerve.
“What the hell do you want?” Emma preferred to remain angry at Jenny, because the other option, thinking about their kiss that she herself had initiated, was out of the question. Not when Jenny was this close to her and looking at her with those blue eyes of hers.
“It’s very simple,” Jenny explained looking at Emma almost desperately, which took Emma a little bit by surprise. “You and I are going to talk.”
