I like to over-analyze.
That's an understatement. I wonder sometimes if I fail at the whole
Occam's razor (Ockham's razor) philosophy. That in my attempt to understand something; I just sort of drown myself in too much deliberation and lose the truth.
While this is applicable to my entire existence of thinking-too-much, in this case it's brought on by my latest Theoretical Bleach ramblings. *insane grin*
Well I've already said that I think Bleach is well on it's way to being a Great Love Story, and it seems that I'm falling back into the "Inoue is going to be evil" mind-trap. I blame
debbiechan's new rant over @
bleachness Now, in whatever text u read, usually when a character is in suffrage (mental or physical) it's expected that it either consumes them or that they use it to empower themselves and come out in a Blaze of Glory. It's generally expected that Inoue is being brought down by Kubo to eventually rise up against all odds. But to me a writer like Kubo excels at failing the reader's expectations.
Aizen was not Mr. Nice Guy, Byakuya was not an Evil, Unkind Bastard, nor was Ken-chan simply a blood-thirsty maniac. Even Isshin ended up not just being the idiot father.
As a mangaka he's adept at hiding these things until it's necessary to reveal them.
For me Inoue has already had her moment of "glory". When she got her powers, it was done to protect, it was brave and noble. But now she's been kidnapped, threatened, beaten, dragged around on a leash, and made to witness the torture and near deaths of her friends. But where's the action?
It's not merely a matter of being afraid. Inoue is afraid of dying, and more than that, she wants to be saved. Now this alone doesn't make a sound argument for Inoue switching teams, if Kubo didn't deliberately juxtapose her situation with what happened with Rukia.
A. When she decided to leave Rukia withdrew from everyone, she left an encoded note to the person she was closest to, she even tied up Kon. Rukia's flight was interrupted by Ishida and ultimately Ichigo.
When Inoue decided to leave, she ignores her closest friend and she makes a tearful goodbye to Ichigo. Her departure was done with stealth, no one knew she was gone until it had already happened.
B. Rukia was immediately stripped of her gigai and imprisoned. She was given a sparse cell, without a view and had Hanatarou, Renji and Byakuya (who makes her feel worse) for visits. She is dressed in a simple, white robe. When it was time to move her, she was bound (hands behind back) and her head was covered, in a very grave and solemn procession - she was taken to a place where she had to face what would be her demise; constantly, and where she could not accurately feel what was going on. She was given very little information. She bore all this with a quite dignity. She compelled Ichigo to cease his fighting, many times. Rukia thought of everyone's safety, Hanatarou, Ganju, Renji, the ryoka. She bargained for their safety (even if it was useless). She did not expect to be saved, while she kept some hope alive, she accepted her death.
Inoue got to keep her powers, she got to use them. Inoue is given a comfortable room, with a view of the moon (still a cell, I know). She is given elaborate clothing. She is given information on her friends, specific information even. She knows what's going on. She isn't befriended by the kind-hearted, she beaten by the mean-spirited. She finds some comfort in Ulquiorra, even though he treats her badly, she is able to stand up to him. When she is dragged from her room, her hands are unnecessarily bound (in front), her mouth is gagged, she is covered in a coarse cloth - It is very degrading, and totally pointless, because her captor quickly removed everything.
She heals Ichigo, she doesn't try to keep him from fighting. She cheers him on, even it it results in him being hurt. Inoue doesn't fare very well herself, she is emotionally on edge all of the time. She doesn't quietly accept her fate at heart. She does not consider her friends apart from Ichigo, and even when she thinks of him, it is only in her own regard. Inoue doesn't bargain with her own worth for their (or his) safety - even if she has already seen that the Espada won't hurt her, for fear of Aizen. There is no lie to Inoue, to make her heart unburdened. She has to watch as the one who came to save her dies.
C. Her friends' will to save her, especially Ichigo's has become a source of strength for Rukia. Since SS she has become stronger, emotionally. She goes to HM to save Inoue, because of her own feelings for the girl.
Inoue so far hasn't been moved by her friends' will. And she has noticed it. Originally she didn't go to SS for Rukia's sake, even if she was already indebted to Rukia at that time, she went to protect Ichigo.
Realistically I know that Inoue isn't the type to turn evil, that she'll prolly just end up back home, and have a good cry with Tatsuki, and prepare to fight all over again.
Wasting so much mental energy on this character leaves me depressed. Usually in books or manga, when this happens I just stop reading, but in this case she's a secondary character, and there's more going on outside of her. I was better off not thinking much of this girl. Curiosity killed the cat and all that.
Lesson learned, will cease and desist all character analysis....maybe, probably.
