The Train Has Left The Station
“Down, girl.”
Olivia turns to find Doris Wolfe approaching the hospital admin desk.
“What?”
“You keep staring at her like that and you’re liable to burn a hole through her blouse.”
Olivia rubs the back of her neck, trying to stop the rising blush.
“That obvious, huh?”
“Oh honey, only a plank of wood could be blind to it.”
Olivia sighs.
“Speaking of which, how is Frank?”
Olivia shoots her a disapproving look. “Uh, he’s pretty banged up, actually.”
“Yes, well... I did suggest he man up.” She almost looks apologetic. Almost.
“You? You caused this.”
“Believe it or not, I was trying to be nice.”
“Sure you were,” Olivia scoffs.
“So how's the happy couple?” Doris’ smirk is unnerving, as always.
“Um... we’re taking it slowly,” Olivia replies, unaware that Natalia has returned from the nurses’ station in time to overhear them.
Doris rolls her eyes. “No shit?”
“Hey! This is new for us,” Olivia protests. “Not that it’s any of your business. God, even Phillip’s had the decency to stay out of it.”
“You’re discussing us with her?” Natalia blurts, making Olivia jump. Then the last comment replays in her mind. “And Phillip!?”
“Well, no, not exactly. He just ran with the ‘My Two Mommies’ thing.“
“So who else knows?”
“Well...” Olivia begins, worrying the edge of her blouse. “Jeffery... and Bill. ”
Natalia tries to digest this.
“And I might have mentioned something to Mel.”
“Mel?”
“Josh, I think... kind of guessed.”
“Anyone else kind of guess?”
Olivia winces.
“Who?” Natalia braces herself.
“Maybe Sister Ann...”
And that’s the final straw.
“What are you, the town crier!?!” she snaps.
Doris can’t suppress a laugh. Two pairs of eyes cut her short.
“Can you at least let me tell Frank myself?” Natalia asks.
“Uh...” Doris clears her throat.
Lucky for Natalia, Doris’ goons were still down the hall getting their injuries assessed.
Not so lucky for Doris.
