The Elephant in the Room - 320 words
“Have you seen Emma’s sneakers?”
Olivia comes down the stairs to find Natalia hiding behind a huge pile of laundry.
“Um, I think they’re under the couch.”
As Olivia crosses the room, Natalia moves around the coffee table, keeping the pile of laundry between them.
“Emma! I’ve found them,” Olivia calls out, scooping up the sneakers and then reaching for the folded clothes. “I’ll take these upstairs while I’m at it.”
“No!” Natalia blurts.
“Why not?”
“Uh...” she stalls. “Actually, I just remembered, I’ve got something on the stove.” She disappears into the kitchen.
Which is where Olivia finds her five minutes later.
“What’s for dinner?”
“Chicken Noodle,” Natalia replies, ducking behind the huge bunch of flowers Olivia had delivered.
“So you like the flowers?”
“What? Oh, yes! They’re beautiful.”
“You know, I think they’d look better over here,” Olivia says, moving the arrangement from the table to the window sill.
She turns back to find Natalia standing inside the fridge, her arms resting on the open door, chin in hand, like it’s the most natural place to be.
“Is something wrong?” Olivia asks.
“No. Why?”
“You seem a little skittish.”
“I’m perfectly fine,” Natalia assures her. “Wait! Where are you going?”
“I want a drink,” Olivia explains.
“I’ll get it for you.”
“Natalia, I think I can get my own drink,” Olivia insists, pulling the fridge door aside.
The strings from Psycho sound in her head as her eyes nearly fall out of her face.
Natalia is massively pregnant.
“Surprise,” is all the swollen woman can say.
Olivia sits bolt upright in her bed, her heart pounding in her chest.
“It was just a dream,” she tells herself, flopping back down onto her pillow.
“We’ve really gotta switch to decaf,” Natalia mumbles, snuggling up to her.
Olivia sleeps fitfully for the rest of the night, her subconscious playing through various scenes, all of them involving Frank Cooper and a shovel.
