In the morning today, as we were going to school, we spotted smoke billowing from the direction of the start of the
Sheikh Zayed Road. We could see it from a distance of over 20 kilometers, so I guess it must've been pretty bad.
As we neared it, the smoke got thicker. It was some building under construction. Traffic started to build up as people ahead of us were stopping and rubbernecking to see the wonderful fire-show. Idiots. To top it off, the police blocked the Sheikh Zayed Road just before the first interchange, so traffic had to be diverted to the awfully narrow Doha Road. We were getting pretty late for school and the traffic had come to a standstill. It just wasn't moving! In 30 minutes, I think we moved about ten meters. No, really.
Everybody in the car was getting pissed off.
Abeer had a midterm [in another city, by the way] at 08:00. It was 7:45. Oops.
Mariam was trying to act all important and said, "My teacher's going to kill me if I walk in late!" Argh. You're not even 12 years old. Shut your piehole.
I wasn't particularly upset about getting to school late, it was just the traffic that was bothering me.
Only Insia seemed unaffected. "Look at the shadows on the rocks," she said.
It was then that I understood what it means to have a child's point of view, a beginner's mind. Away from all the commotion, out of all that chaos. Guess we need to be a little more like little children.
