- Today the first black mayor Ireland's ever had was elected. He's a man who came here just 7 years ago as an asylum seeker, and he's achieved this huge leap for all immigrants and for Irish culture in just that amount of time. I'm so happy for him, and for Ireland. Until I started to commute to Dublin every day for college I never realised just how multi-cultural Ireland is. It's just not something that occurs to you when you think about this country. Dublin is this glorious hive of action and excitement and bustle and culture and history, and it's got so many people of different cultures living there. I like that new people have spread across the country from the capital too.
- I can't believe it's Friday already (it's about 12.30 as I type this)! The week flew by. I hardly angsted about Doctor Who at all. Between Utopia and The Sound of Drums I was all impatient and whingey, but I hardly noticed the days go by this week. Whoa. Doctor Who tomorrow!!! And then no more for 6 months. Argh. That sucks.
- I've noticed many posts on my flist about 1) the ongoing and baffling insanity of the Rosefen and 2) the lack of Ten/Martha-ness overall in fandom. Didn't have time to comment on them all so I'll just say YES. A thousand times yes. 1) The Rosefen are blatant idiots with incurable tunnel vision and 2) I hate that more people haven't been ensnared by Ten/Martha too.
On that topic though, I've always thought that this was because Martha is older, more learned and more mature than Rose, and by default, than the Rosefen, and so they didn't click with her like they did with Rose. Sso many of them identify with Rose because they are like Rose, whereas some of the 20s-ish women in fandom, ones in college, doing degrees, working hard, they've latched onto Martha a lot easier.
Also, and I saw someone mention this and so so so agreed. Many people, even those who aren't rabid Ten/Rose shippers, automatically think of Ten/Rose as the shipping default for new Who. Ten/Rose is what the show's ship is 'supposed' to be, so they and of course the Rosefen don't count Ten/Martha or indeed Ten/Anyone Else, because Ten/Rose is the only 'proper' ship.
RTD, what HAVE you done?
He had all the opportunity to make Rose's arc better in series 2. When he found of BP was leaving, instead of making series 2 Rose more mature, more independant and yet more attached to the Doctor, he could have done something wonderful, and made her more mature, more independant and yet growing up and apart from the Doctor. Amicably though.
At the end of Doomsday, we'd could've had this wondorous moment, where she made this brave decision to go to the other universe and spend her life there with her family, instead of the illogical, stupidly stubborn and incredibly naive decision she made to forsake her family and spend her life with someone who, arguably, didn't need her forever, like she seemed to need him, and would move on from her if need be (which need did be, and he did move on).
If Rose had made the decision to stay on parallel Earth herself, the Rosefen would have nothing to bloody weep about still. Yes, they'd miss Rose anyway, but they wouldn't have so much leg room to still be harping on about her now, at the end of series 3, when she's been gone a year. This big tragic Romeo and Juliet love story they seem to view Ten/Rose as would be nonexistant because the Juliet of the scenario would have chosen to be separated from the Romeo.
And I will add that said Romeo did choose to be separated from Juliet - Ten went up behind Rose and put the big yellow button on her to trick her into going to parallel Earth. Did she really not get the picture when he tried to do that?
- Ooh Doctor Who series 1's on telly right now! Eek! It's Dalek! That's a great episode. Mr Van Statten! OMG there's Adam. *que Scarlett's irrational Adam love*
- I am highly irritated that RTD said in the latest Radio Times that in 3x13 Martha will pay back everything the Doctor's done for her. EXCUSE ME? Everything HE'S done for HER??!! He's really got to be kidding me now. I shall proceed with a damning condemnation of that:
Smith and Jones: Very first day she meets him, Martha saves the Doctor's life.
The Shakespeare Code: She restarts his heart
Gridlock: Makes him talk about Gallifrey, thus giving him a much needed outlet for his feelings
Dalek 2-parter: Devises plan to kill pig slaves so he can go out on top of the building
Lazarus Experiment: Is bait for the monster so the Doctor can defeat him
42: Helps and takes care of him after he's been possessed
Human Nature 2-parter: Works as a maid for two months in a racist and derogatory time to make sure that he is not discovered by killer aliens after him.
Blink: Works in a shop to support him when they are stuck in 1969
Finale 3 parter: Well, I think it's obvious with the whole 'Martha Jones is going to save the world' tagline in all the RTD quotes. Martha's going to save the day while the Doctor's busy drawing his pension and looking for his dentures.
SO.
Martha needs to repay the Doctor, eh, RTD? I THINK NOT.
