Two casinos in one day

07 April: I head out on a mini snarfari this morning. I learn several things. First, one should always, always, always bring a hat. It is only 10 by the time I finish and I am sweating buckets.

Second, I will not chase a geocache over a cliff, even if the slippery slope towards its location is only 10 feet; injury or death beyond the odd scratch or bruise are not my cup of tea.

Third, it is not a good idea to arrive at a Catholic church on Sunday around Mass, especially on first communion day, unless I’m going to Mass, which seems unlikely.

There’s a gorgeous little park-Sunrise Point-with several interpretive signs just beyond the casino levee, and I have a walk around there. One corner has been turned into a replica elder’s village, sacred space to be shared by the community. It has a mud hut and a leaf? Palm?-roofed shelter structure.

The park is right alongside a lush pond and under the Ocean-to-Ocean bridge. That’s where I go when I realize now is not a good time to be near the church, so I walk over the bridge and get a bird’s eye view of the levee and the historical marker at the end, which is a virtual cache and turns out to be my 70th.

I pop into the casino on the way back, after photographing the historical markers at the church and former mission. I lose a dollar but have fun for half an hour or so on the nickel slots. Then I go inside and take a nap. DH gets up and I send him off to Harbor Freight, which is fun for him and not for me.

I find and fix a bug in the volunteer lounge. Then I sleep again. I’m lethargic; might have been overdoing it a bit-or underdoing it on the exercise!

When DH gets back, we leave the casino, and find a gas station. On the way back from the gas station, I spot a couple of brand-new historical markers that may have been put up in the last year. I’ll get them on my next visit. I still haven’t completely logged my visits to Yuma from last January, so I don’t need to add new ones at this point.

We decide to have a change of scene and park at Quechan Casino for the night. It’s close to dark when we get in, and we head inside for another hour of fun courtesy of a dollar bill and some nickel and penny slots.

I enjoy myself. Back when we were financially ok, DH and I would do things like go to Las Vegas or dine out without a thought. We hardly ever do anything that involves spending money on anything other than the essentials. Those days were fun. I miss them. Walking back in a warm desert night, hand-in-hand, I am reminded of those times, and am happy.
