My head hurts: FSU 24, Maryland 27
Man. Looking at the stats, I can't figure out how we lost this game! Florida State dropped about 460 yards of total offense on Maryland, and it looks like the Terps had... 227? Really!? WTF!
I'm not that upset about this loss. Sure a win would've been nice, but for the first time in a LONG time I have hope. Why? Xavier Lee got the start at quarterback tonight in place of Drew Weatherford, who has tendinitis in his foot. And Lee was freaking amazing. The guy was on-target ALL night, and was slowed up only by receivers dropping balls. When he didn't throw, he ran - and he ALWAYS got positive yardage and usually got the first down! I can only remember two bad decisions from Lee - one where it looked like the ball slipped out of his hand and one where he intentionally grounded it. Then there were the beautiful plays...! Long passes of 55 and 37 yards to Chris Davis and Greg Carr, respectively. And of course, two touchdown passes to the same guys. I can only dream of what Lee would be like if he had 20 games under his belt right now!
FSU running back Antone Smith was RED HOT all night. I was flabbergasted when the coaches insisted on putting Lorenzo Booker in there... How do you take out a guy who's averaging 7-8 yards a carry!? And let's talk about Joe Surratt (fullback). WTF, man!? First this dude gets completely STUFFED on a 4th-and-1 play and then whips off his helmet, drawing a 15-yard penalty. Guess what!? Maryland scored a touchdown three plays later. Thanks, bud! >=( And speaking of stupid penalties, what the hell Cory Niblock? WHAT is with the damn false starts!? You're a senior! You haven't figured this crap out yet!?
So now we sit at 4-4 (2-4 in the ACC) and are fighting just to get to a bowl. Every team in the ACC Atlantic division has beaten us, with the exception of Wake Forest (they'll get their chance on November 11th). It really is truly shocking... And frustrating. Each loss was by 7 points or less. We're off to our worst start since 1976, Bobby Bowden's first year as coach. Unbelievable... Hopefully, we're building up some MAD karma.
Next up is Virginia at home next weekend. I hope that the coaches give X the start. It's time to build for the future.
