After posting about the fiftieth anniversary of William Hartnell's departure and the very first regeneration/renewal last week, it seems only right this week to remark upon the fiftieth anniversary of Patrick Troughton taking up the Time Lordly mantle.

On this day, in 1966, the Second Doctor had his first outing in Power of the Daleks, which has of course now been released in animated form (or the first episode at any rate) on the BBC Store.

(I'm sure other options for viewing this may become available on't'interwebz over the coming days and weeks, and whether you take up those options is, I suppose, between you and your conscience and whether or not there are any other options in whatever part of the world you happen to be in, although I will observe that the more people who watch this via the official, and legal, channels, the more likely we are to get more of the same in the future).

Anyway, I could wax lyrical at some length about just how much I like Patrick Troughton's portrayal of the Doctor, and Ben and Polly, and Daleks, and all of his later companions and adventures too, of course, but I have the feeling I have done so numerous times in the past. I stand by my often-asserted assertion that he may be the most technically brilliant actor ever to portray the Doctor...although I wish, as I am sure we all do, that more of his stories had survived in their original form.

Evil of the Daleks would be the obvious next choice for the animated treatment, right?

And if you have a certain regard for Polly and, more to the point, for Anneke Wills (as I am sure you do), you could do a lot worse than to read THIS.

53 years of who, second doctor, daleks, history of doctor who, doctor who actors, doctor who news
