Precious Moments at the Braeden-Winchester Household...

Lisa had barely heard the baby crying when she felt the bed shift. Groaning, she just rolled over, figuring that whatever was going on, Dean was going to handle it. It took her thirty seconds for her to realize that they had only been home for a day and that Dean might not actually know what to do.

She quickly got to her feet and wrapped the robe around her as she made a path to the nursery, intent on saving her husband from what could be a new daddy disaster. Not that she didn't trust Dean with their son - she did - but he had yet to handle a late night request.

When she got to the doorway, though, she stopped to just watch as Dean picked the baby up out of the crib. Ben was barely a week old, and he had been born a week early so he was still a bit on the small size so his head fit right in the palm of Dean's big hand.

"Hey buddy," Dean said softly as he slowly rearranged the baby into his arms the way Lisa had shown him. "Sorry, I know I'm not the warm body with the endless food supply attached to her, but let me see if I can help here. What's wrong?"

The infant kept crying, and Dean rocked him back and forth as he paced the room. "You're either hungry or dirty. Let's check under the hood first, ok?" Lifting the infant a bit, he managed and look down into the diaper and then ran a finger along the inside. "No leaks. So you just want a bit of fuel. I can do that."

Holding Ben with one hand, he opened the small fridge in the nursery and pulled out a bottle, then stuck it into the bottle warmer on top of it. Thirty seconds later he pulled it out and rubbed the nipple on Ben's lips, but he just kept crying, not hungry either.

"You're not going to help me here, huh?" Dean said, and Lisa could hear the bit of frustration slipping into his voice. But she watched as Dean kept rocking their son, tucking the bottle under his arm as he headed towards the window. "We're going to have to work on your communication skills, right? Don't want your mommy thinking I can't handle the job."

Dean shifted to holding Ben against his chest, one hand holding the baby's bottom while the other rested Ben's head against his chest. He kept rocking the infant, and Lisa could hear him start to hum something. After a moment, she realized that he was humming Metallica and a hand slipped over her lips to hide the smile. She knew his nervous habits and found it just... adorable...

... and effective. Ben quickly quieted down, his little fists relaxing as he listened to his daddy hum and his heartbeat, and soon Dean sat down in the rocking chair, humming as Ben fell back asleep in his arms.

"I know you're out there," he said softly after a moment, and Lisa slipped around the edge of the doorway she had ducked behind. He smiled at her, then looked down at Ben. "I think I'm getting the hang of this."

"You did a great job." She walked over to her boys and kissed Dean on the forehead.

"Go back to sleep. I can handle this right now."

"I'll keep your side of the bed warm." She smiled and gave him another kiss, ran an affectionate hand along her son's head, and then went back to her room as the sounds of Dean's humming echoed down the hallway.
