This is going to be incredibly vague--sorry!
I watched this as a young kid, so it must have been mid-nineties; a family member had this program on VHS. It was live-action, about a young boy (around 10 years-old or so) who was walking through some rainforest/woods type of land with some creature. I don't know if it was a bear or bird or what, but it wasn't a human and it was friendly. This animal was tall, stood upright, and was very clearly a human in a costume (similar to Barney in that regard).
I know how insanely vague this is, but really any possible name of *any* similar program would be nice. I have been looking for this thing for years and can't ask the family member.
