This was a book I had to read in my final year of school. I think it must have been published in the 90s, but I could be wrong. It was certainly before 2005.
It was written by an Irish novelist. I want to say Colm Toibin, but I've looked over his books, and none of it rings a bell. I think the surname always threw me, because I always had trouble pronouncing it... I think, I could be confusing it with someone else.
The book, I remember, wasn't meant to have a plot, at least according to the author.
It involves a man, who is a lawyer, and goes over his life. He's named after an Irish politician. Eamon, I think, but hell, idk. I think it's set towards the end of the 1970s, if memory serves. He and his wife have a strained relationship, and he rarely talks to his daughter. His daughter, early on in the novel, has an abortion, and he doesn't talk about it. Later on in the novel, his wife has a stroke, and he has to take care of her. I think he and his daughter start to make amends because of it.
There's a few random things I remember:
- He has a holiday house near a beach. This is where his wife has a stroke.
- There's a house on a cliff that's crumbling. At one point, he checks it out, and the owner is sitting in there having dinner, with one wall of the house having crumbled away.
- There are three court cases in the story. Each deals with an abortion. In the first case, he sends the woman to jail, second I don't remember, third he lets her go.
- He checks under his car for bombs.
There is A LOT of symbolism in this book, which is why we read it. And I hated it.
I'm sure all I'll need is the author or title and I'll go 'd'oh'.
TIA.
