English author book and movie

Jan 18, 2011 08:21

I read the book and now I was watching the movie. I was distracted/confused by the fact that the character whose name was "St. John" was being called "Sinjin" (it was obviously the first time I'd heard that).
Who was the author, what book/movie?  Possibly Victorian?
Anyone?

Found: Jane Eyre

Could be Jane Eyre. Her cousin is called St.John.

That must be it. No wonder I couldn't find it looking under Jane Austen. Thanks!

In Jane Eyre, there is no period/full stop in the St John name. Not many people care about it today, but in the old days there is no full stop when it's a given name and there is when it's a surname. Nowadays it's interchangeable.

FWIW, the pronunciation of St. Clair is sinclair. :D

Ah! Logical enough, but I wouldn't have made the connection. Those English are always doing this to me (one of my best friends is English, and once a week I have to stop her and say, "How do you spell that word? Because I think I know it with the emphasis on all the other syllables...")
Thanks!
