/thanks to lutine, i found it, it's 'the thief of always'.
i've been searching for this book on and off for the past year and i can never find anything. it's about a boy who finds a hidden compartment in his house. on the other side of the door there are other people. (several characters you learn to love, but in the end they turn out evil). four seasons go by within a week. this repeats constantly (i think it was to attract the children. they could trick or treat all the time, have christmas all the time, etc). he meets two friends. i think there is something living in the attic that controls it all..and eventually it's real goal is to take all of the kids' souls. this separate world turns out to be horrible, so the three all conspire to escape all of the madness.
it's a lot like the book coraline. i haven't read it since middle school..so i might of mixed a few things up with the two. i'm really sorry for being so vague..i just really want to find this book and i figure i'd turn to you guys. i think the only thing that really stuck out was the whole seasons thing.
