I'm reminded of a movie where bf and gf are in this village (seems like 1950's) that they suspect is fake. So finally they discover reality by locating this dome building outside the village and can finally see that their village is nothing more than just a bland mix of VR and reality where everyone is pretending (not intentionally) that what they see is real.
The two then break through another dimension of their reality's reality to find that they are really just dreaming in a pod, maintained underground by an old man. They surface to find a barren world which they go off and prosper in.
