MFM 8 Weekend

Sep 07, 2004 11:16

This past weekend was the weekend of MFM. And following the tradition of the past three years, I had a few other things to do during the con. Two years ago, I was moving out of my apartment. Last year, there was a family reunion on Sunday. This year Sunday was my grandfather's 80th birthday. I couldn't miss that.

Anyway, I was looking forward to MFM because it would be something to do after a month of nothing but grinding away at that freelance project. Of course, that was when I was thinking I would have it done by Sept 1. Now, MFM was just a break. (I'm sure the people I'm doing the project for wouldn't have even looked at the changes over the weekend, so that does not bother me.) I knew the con was coming up, but I wasn't really prepared for it since I was working late up until the night before.

Friday, I thought I was going to get out of work early, but didn't. Well, not as early as I had hoped. When my boss left and didn't say anything and the senior manager was still around, I wasn't sure if we were going to get out early or not. On a normal day, my going-home bathroom break is always thwarted by the cleaning lady closing the bathroom off for cleaning. Well, Friday she did it an hour early, so I took that as a sign that I could leave at that time.

So here I was at the convention in my work clothes. I got lots of strange looks from the con-goers until they saw I had a badge. I got lots of "finally a normal person" from the non-con-goers until they saw the badge. I guess I could have strapped on the meerkat tail while I'm wearing business casual clothes.

jaggers and
kilroymcb stayed at my house during the weekend. Polar was happy to have extra attention. Especially since we would get back to the house so late at night.

I managed to suit up twice as Rorwarr the Wookiee. That was pretty fun. I like having great visibility relatively speaking. I don't have great peripheral vision, but I can at least see where I'm going. I guess people didn't mind a short Wookiee. Several people wanted photos taken with me.

I got some badges and sketchbook art. Unfortunately, these aren't great scans of them. (Click on the thumbnails to see the whole drawing)

Sunday, I stopped by the con for a little bit before heading over to my parents' house for my grandfather's birthday party. All his family showed up. After that, I made it back to the con in time to catch the Masquerade and Closing Ceremonies. Then a group of us went to eat at the Pig 'N' Whistle. It was a tradition to eat there and look at the Memphis Belle nose cone and other artifacts. However, this time the restaurant was redesigned, and all the neat things were gone. It still had good food, though.

After everyone left on Monday, I bought a digital camera at Best Buy. They had some coupons and things on the camera I had been thinking about for a while. The Sony Cyber-shot P100. It's small and will be an easy-to-use companion to my video camera.

I'm sure I left some stuff out that I wanted to mention. I might post some more later.

The con was great. It was a nice break even though I still got about the same about of sleep as I had the whole month before. But, instead of working that late, I had a wonderful time hanging out with old friends and meeting new ones. Now, I'm back to working on that project and working at work.

After a con that I was looking forward to as a break but wasn't really prepared to attended, I was definitely hit with post-con depression when I got back to the house and opened Flash MX.
