Last Wednesday through Saturday (April 16-19,) I went out into the woods with Dad to hunt for the self-proclaimed king of the forest and sky: the turkey. He was armed with his shotgun and I was armed with my video camera. I usually get more turkeys that he does. :)
This year, we didn’t have much luck. We heard a few gobblers, but didn’t see any. We did see a couple of hens and one young male, though. A few times, it sounded like the gobblers were about to walk right in on us, but there was always some sudden strange noise that spooked the turkeys. One time, it sounded like a dog yelping for hours. Another time, it kind of sounded like a mix between someone yelling and a bobcat. So, if there were some were-critters out there somewhere, we didn’t meet. Oh well, maybe next time. (It was around the full moon, but during the daytime.)
We did manage to “lure” a raccoon in close. He stayed in the bushes. I’m wondering if he stayed there because he saw us, or he was waiting to pounce on a turkey as they walked toward the decoys.
There were lots of cows roaming around. We were on the property of one of Dad’s friends. He raises cows, and there were about six mother cows with their calves in the area we were camping. Most of them would just stand and look at us for about half a minute and then go back to grazing. However, there was this one cow that kept her calf near a bush away from the others but near the camp. She would moo at us every now and then and sometimes wander into the camp sniffing of the blue tarp we used to cover the four wheelers at night. I guess she wanted some blue grass.
It was still a fun trip, even though we didn’t really see any turkeys. We rode around on the four-wheelers and stayed outside to look at the really bright stars. (Without mosquitoes! But, there were lots of ticks.) I’m surprised I could still pick out a few constellations.
I’ll probably get some of the video digitized or some stills of some shots eventually. I’m going to try to put it on a DVD or Video CD for Dad. My parents’ DVD player is the only DVD player out of all the ones I’ve tested that can’t play the DVDs I make. Maybe a Video CD will work. If not, there’s always VHS.
