Yeah, the last game really did just finish...
Chicago 5, Tampa Bay 3.
(Series 2-1, Tampa Bay)
The Sox come home and take a game to keep their postseason breathing.
The Rays put the first run on the board in the top of the 2nd - Dioner Navarro doubling, advancing on a Rocco Baldelli ground out and scoring on a soft grounder by Akinori Iwamura. The Rays had the possibility of scoring more - A.J. Pierzynski allowed Jason Bartlett (who had reached on a walk) and Iwamura to advance on a passed ball. However, B.J. Upton was unable to capitalise on this turn of events, flying out to left-fielder Dewayne Wise.
An inning later and the White Sox equalled - Matt Garza walked Wise, who went on to steal 2B and score on a Pierzynski single.
In the 4th, the Sox added three more - Garza loaded the bases by allowing a double by Jim Thome, walking Paul Konerko and allowing a base hit to Ken Griffey Jr. Thome scored on a sac fly by Alexei Ramirez which allowed Konerko and Griffey to advance. Dewayne Wise hit a two RBI double to bring both home, however he was left stranded when Juan Uribe struck out and Orlando Cabrera ground out to end the inning.
Two innings passes before either team added to their score, the White Sox adding another - Ken Griffey Jr. walked and then was replaced by pinch-runner Brian Anderson who went on to steal 2B and advance to 3B on a Ramirez ground out, scoring on a Juan Uribe single to left field. Uribe went on to steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch by Garza during Cabrera's at-bat. However, Cabrera struck out swinging to end the inning.
It didn't take the Rays long to start closing the gap, putting up two runs in the top of the 7th. John Danks walked Rocco Baldelli to open the inning. He went on to score as part of a two-out 2 RBI HR to left field by B.J. Upton. Carlos Pena reached in the next at bat, however Evan Longoria was called out on strikes to close any chance for more scoring in that inning.
However, the Rays were unable to add anything in the 9th, meaning the Sox live to fight another day.
White Sox: 5 runs on 7 hits with no errors.
Rays: 3 runs on 8 hits with no errors.
Los Angeles 5, Boston 4.
(In 12 innings)
(Series 2-1, Boston)
Los Angeles keep their hopes alive in free baseball affair.
The Angels got off to a good start in their fight to stay in the postseason, putting up a run in the top of the 1st - Chone Figgins hitting a double and later scoring on an RBI single by Torii Hunter.
However, the Red Sox came back and then some in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring three runs as Jed Lowrie walked, Jason Varitek singled and Coco Crisp walked, loading up the bases with two outs. Joe Saunders failed to contain the situation and get the final out, instead offering up a single to Jacoby Ellsbury on which all three baserunners scored. Dustin Predroia ground into a force out to end the inning and spare the Angels anything extra being added to the deficit.
Top of the 3rd and the Angels managed to claw back the two runs to make it 3-3 - Vladimir Guerrero doubled and with one out remaining, Mike Napoli came to the plate and hit a two RBI homer to left field.
In the 5th, it was the Angels turn to take the lead again, with Mike Napoli going yard to left field a second time. However in the bottom of the inning, they surrendered that lead as the Red Sox drew even when Ellsbury doubled and then scored when Kevin Youkilis followed suit with two outs. Jason Bay then walked, however the Angels got out of the inning level with the Red Sox when Mike Lowell was called out on strikes for the third out.
Both teams threw up goose eggs for the next four innings, taking the game into extras, where a further two innings passed both scoreless. In the top of the 12th the Angels put together a run as Mike Napoli reached on a single, advanced to 2B on a sac bunt by Howie Kendrick and then scored on a single by Erick Aybar. Garret Anderson went on to advance Aybar to 3B on a single, however Mark Teixeira could not convert runners into runs, grounding into a force out.
David Ortiz drew a walk from Jered Weaver to open the bottom of the 12th, however he was left on base when the next three hitters up went down in order.
Angels: 5 runs on 16 hits with no errors.
Red Sox: 4 runs on 7 hits with no errors.
