Los Angeles 2, Boston 3
(Series 3-1, Boston)
Boston walk off and into the Championship Series.
A slow game, the scoring didn't start until the halfway point of the game, though Boston threatened in the 4th on a throwing error by Chone Figgins that cost them an out and allowed David Ortiz to make his way to 3B. The danger ended when Jason Bay hit a fly ball into the waiting glove of left fielder Garret Anderson.
An inning later and Boston got on the board first with Mark Kotsay scoring on a Jacoby Ellsbury ground out. In the same inning, Jason Varitek went on to score on a double by Dustin Pedroia. Pedroia ended up stranded when David Ortiz grounded out to end the inning.
Three innings later and the Angels were on the offensive, putting up the tying runs - Mark Teixeira and Vladimir Guerrero walked and then advanced on a passed ball by Jason Varitek, both scoring on a line drive single by Torii Hunter.
However, the Sox had the final say on last licks - Jason Bay hit a ground-rule double on a fly ball to right field and was driven home on a Jed Lowrie single, advancing the Sox to the ALCS.
Angels: 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 error.
Boston: 3 runs on 9 hits with no errors.
Tampa Bay 6, Chicago 2.
(Series 3-1, Tampa Bay)
The Rays fairy tale continues as Chi-Sox fall.
The Rays didn't waste any time on bringing the offense to this game - B.J. Upton putting the first of the runs with a homer to left field in the top of the 1st. And the big hits kept coming for Upton - his bat was responsible for tacking on another run in the 3rd, another HR to left.
In the 4th, the Rays added two more - Carl Crawford walked and scored on a double by Cliff Floyd, who went on to advance to 3B on the throw. Floyd then scored on a line-drive single by Dioner Navarro, the Chi-Sox yet to record an out. However, the Rays failed to punish them more - three quick outs followed.
In the bottom of the inning, the Sox put the first of their two on the board as Paul Konerko went yard to left field.
The Rays responded in kind with another run in the top of the 5th - Akinori Iwamura reached on a single and later scored on a line drive by Carlos Pena, with only one out. Evan Longoria struck out swinging bringing Carl Crawford to bat, however the inning ended when Pena got picked off attempting to steal 2B.
The top of the 6th saw no let up in the Rays offense, threatening to score again when Carl Crawford got on base and then proceeded to steal 2B and 3B during a single at-bat. However, with two outs, Gabe Gross could not reward his teammate with a run, popping out to short to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Sox had no such problem putting up a run as Jermaine Dye hit one out to left field.
The Rays put the final nail in the coffin in the 7th - Jason Bartlett doubled on a line drive. Iwamura followed, and struck out swinging, bringing B.J. Upton to the plate again. Not wanting to chance a third home run, Matt Thornton intentionally walked him. However Carlos Pena did not reward the Sox by being the easy out they hoped, hitting an RBI single which scored Bartlett and advanced Upton to 3B - the run being the last one of the game and ending the Sox postseason hopes.
Rays: 6 runs on 10 hits with no errors.
Chi-Sox: 2 runs on 4 hits with no errors.
