Crafty Things are We!

Ahh, the sun is finally shining! This means good things for me--I'm gonna go out and let it shine on me face for a bit, I am! (Just a very little bit, you understand, I burn easily!) I've got energy today, so I might as well use it, right?

The wonder hubby and I have decided that today is going to be a craft day. We are going to work on some projects that have been hanging around the house for a while. For instance:

This is our new feast gear box, or it will be as soon as we fix it. Lachlan got these huge sheets of extremely dense Styrofoam from work and he's going to use those to section the interior of the box:

I'm going to cover the Styrofoam with some very nice fabric I've been saving for awhile, and then we're going to put it on a little wooden platform with wheels. I'll probably kumihimo some cords to attach as handles of a sort, and then we'll be in good shape.

I wouldn't normally use a rattan woven cube as a feast gear box, but this one actually has a wooden framework, so it's a lot sturdier than it looks. Should last us a couple of years, anyway.

And today, I plan on finishing the cooler cover that I've had in the works forever; and get our chair covers done as well. That will leave this weekend free for housework and finishing my banner--finally! I can't believe how long I've put that off! Okay, that's not strictly true--I can believe it, and here's why:

Yup, the bane of my existence: Vair. Why, oh why did I put Vair on my Coat of Arms? What was I thinking? Oh yeah, I remember now: I was Crown Princess, and I had to get my device passed in a big hurry, and at that time, no one was using furs on their devices, so it was a sure way to get mine passed.

But yesterday, I found a miracle: fabric paint pens!!! And there was some in the right shade of blue for my vair. So I can now just draw the fur on my fabric and be done with it, which is just as well because I absolutely hate appliqueing! The gryphons are bad enough! However, that also means that I'm out of excuses........dammit!

Lachlan has a craft that he's trying to master: Trichinopoly wire knitting, aka Viking wire weaving. It looks intricate, but very cool. It's also tremendously period, so he's a very happy camper--unless he's actually trying to make it; then, he goes from happy camper to frustrated wire worker in about 0.2 seconds! I tell him that it takes a while to get good at something, Rome wasn't built in a day, yadda, yadda.....he would probably prefer that I just shut up and leave him alone, although he'd never say that. In so many words, I mean. He just looks at me. Sort of a glare rather than a look, really. Yeah, I need to leave him alone when he's practicing that, don't I?

Anyway, here's what the finished product looks like:

I'm quite looking forward to the finished products. It will go well with the Viking dress I'm making myself, as well as the tunics I have planned for him.

I'm almost done with the dress: It's green linen, long-sleeved of course. I gusseted the underarms and put in side gores, so it rather resembles the Hedeby gown's conjectured undergown. I'm going to make the apron gown next, it will be based on the Hedeby gown fragment. I also have the undertunic cut out of natural colored linen (I don't know what the Norse called the undertunic/chemise!) I just need to sew it up and I will have a new outfit--yeah for me!

We also have to make time for the garden this weekend: Finish picking everything because the weather guessers say that we're going to get our first frost Tuesday; complete the set up of the cold frames; and plant stuff in said cold frames. Looks like we're going to have a productive weekend, which is my favorite kind. Wish us luck!
