I'm just writing up (i.e. filling out the notes of) some of my recent past ( 1 2) and I'm struggling with the use of single quotes.  For me I use the single quotes to denote a connotation of reference, uncertainty or figurativeness that cannot easily be replaced through literal explanation, but single quotes seem to be frowned upon by style guides ( Read more... )

After the splurge that was the first version of this story, today I've had a go at rewriting it in the third person.  I said at the beginning of the year that I was going to work on the craft of writing; in fact I made a conscious decision that I wasn't going to write a novel! :)  On the other hand I did intend to do a bit of practice and playing ( Read more... )

As you may or may not be aware, I'm feeling a bit rough at the moment; lot's of pressure and disappointment et cetera and I haven't been able to settle to do any writing, which of course is frustrating and a vicious circle.  Today, I forced myself to sit and write.  "Spend an hour writing a story in the first person." is the topic and here it is.  ( Read more... )
