Today: Professionally Awesome, Personally Crappy

Awesome:
+ Went to the Creative Commons Technology Summit at Google all day, get to bill hours ("business development") for listening to interesting talks, asking a good question of the digital copyright registry companies/nonprofits folks ("I'd like to ask you about death." re: what happens if the company folds), and eavesdropping on the irc backchannel that was going the whole time.

+ Meeting Sumana's friend Luis. Catching up with people. Meeting new people. Seeing Aaron Swartz the day before he leaves for Boston. And sarterus was there since he's at CC this summer! Hooray for humans!

+ Went to the excellent party at Stanford Law School later on to commemorate Larry Lessig's leaving Stanford to focus on Change Congress, saw lots of famous people (The Woz! Jimmy Wales! John Perry Barlow!), represented the firm alongside the jillion other summers and lawyers from the firm at the party (but only three of us were at the summit!).

+ Bought Anansi Boys, which I HAVE NEVER READ, and World War Z, which is about the zombie apocalypse, at the comics store near Google.

Awkward moment:
ME, TO OLD MAN I'D BEEN CHATTING WITH: I'm a law student. And what do you do?
GERHARD CASPAR: I'm the former president of this university. Among other things...

Oh. He was really nice, though.

Not Awesome:
- Forgetting to bring my laptop to the summit. WTF, self? No, really, who the fuck forgets to bring a laptop to an event like that?! I felt so cut off. I had to spy over the shoulder of my BFF from work.

- My car almost overheating; discovering it had either burned off or leaked out ALL its coolant; gingerly driving to Longs to get more, and gingerly driving home. Car must go into shop first thing tomorrow. Thanks to my BFF for coming with me to Longs 10 minutes before closing and generally being helpful and supportive. Unfortunately this means I may miss HALFLAB tomorrow :( I guess this means I'm overdue for going by the Stanford bike shop to rent a bike for the summer and start using it for my 4.5-mile/each way commute...

- Coming home to discover Natasha apparently needs to go to the vet (bloody stool and I think she's had diarrhea lately too).

- Oh, and I apparently gained 3.5 pounds between Thursday, when I went to the gym, and yesterday, when I went to the gym. I'm hoping this is due to lunar forces. Even so. I need that bike. I'm actually sick of big, rich sit-down lunches.

- I think people are shooting at each other in my neighborhood, judging from those popping noises.

Not sure why my car and my cat decided to both malfunction at once, on the same evening when disturbing noises are afoot, though I guess they'd both been giving me warning signs.

I'm going to go pretend my car works, my cat works, I live in Pacific Heights, I'm a size 6 again, and I didn't perhaps imply to the former president of Stanford University that he's an alcoholic. By immersing myself in the world of The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon, which is fucking amazing.
