The funniest thing about Valentines day is that it's like a forced display of affection...You have to be sweet and nice, just because that's what the holiday dictates. It doesn't matter that you have a great relationship 364 days of the year, on Valentines, you have to top yourself and be more in love with each other than you normally are.
That said, it is rare for people to actually be emotional on cue. In fact, maybe all the emotional pressure puts them even more on edge and brings out the hate.
I found out yesterday that two lovely friends of mine have called it quits. I knew their relationship in a limited manner, but it seemed solid and meaningful. What we around them couldn't quite figure out was, 'did they do it on Valentines day?' Not that February 14th isn't as valid a day as any, but it's like, you shine it on til the 15th or better yet, the next week and then you drop the axe.
I guess if you're thinking it, say it, but really...could it be worse than that? Apparently yes, I was told of another friend of mine who had once, while rolling on ecstasy, on Valentines day, with a group of people...told his girlfriend who was at the time professing her undying love..."Yeah, I just don't think this is working out." YEOUCH. Folks, I think we have a winner for the Unfathomably Awful Person award -- Yes, that is outrageous, even for him, which is saying a lot.
