Title: Mezzo-Piano
Characters: Flynn Scifo, Yuri Lowell
Notes: The music is soft and calling, and even the most diligent of student can't help but want to hear more. Part one of the Harmony miniseries.
The sound of a piano drifted through the halls, though the building was empty save for one tired student who woke with a start at the desk he was seated at, papers scattered everywhere. Petition for Healthier Lunches, Homcoming Dance, Concert, Spirit Week. With a sigh he picked up the papers and stacked them together evenly, letting the music guide him in almost a trance as he stepped wordlessly out of the room, bag filled to the zipper with books and sheets, and looked down both ways of the hall. After a pause, he turned left and started towards the music that sang lonely through the audienceless building.
It brought him to the String's room, and with a quick peek inside the blond witheld a small gasp of surprise when he saw who it was. Fingers danced gracefully across the ivory keys, feet working hard at the pedals as the music soared and dipped, the pianist's entire body moving with such intensity he didn't notice as the other stepped in and quietly put down his bag.
Carefully and silently the student took a case from the racks they stayed on, unlatching the black container and taking a golden brown viola from it, along with a bow to play it with. When there was a lull in the music, and he began a song the violaist knew, they played together.
The sudden start of a new instrument in the room, however, caused the pianist to cut off short, leaving only the striking and soothing sound of the viola in the air. He didn't turn. After a moment, he began to play again and their instruments sang in sweet harmony, piano and string. Only when it was over did either speak.
"I didn't know you could play the piano, Yuri." The pianist laughed and turned around.
"I didn't know you were so musically inclined, Flynn, though I guess you do succeed in everything." The other rolled his eyes, but a smile matched their warmth.
"I practice here and there. But I'm serious, when did you learn?"
"Years and years ago. The teachers thought I had some kind of, I don't know, natural talent and started me on the piano. It's just become habit to come down here and play."
"You're wonderful."
"A compliment from such a great person! I'm honored. Can you play?"
"A little. Just the basics, but I'm willing to learn if you'd teach me."
Yuri turned around and patted the seat beside him and Flynn put the viola and the bow back in its case, careful to latch it shut before he put it back and went to sit beside the other. They did a few warm ups, running the scales Yuri said, and began some harder things. Different pieces of music, not difficult but confusing to someone that can't remember which keys are which ("There's so many! How do you remember them all?" "You get used to it, like how you remember where to put your fingers to make different tones on your viola thing. Look, here's middle C. That's where we begin.") and what pedals do what ("Left is soft, right is sustain." "Then what's the middle for?" "... Can't remember, but I never really used it."), but soon Yuri was teaching Flynn how to manage both hands on the keys and played a song they both knew, dueted it on both sides of the spectrum, Yuri on high and Flynn on low, and laughed when the latter made a mistake.
Before they knew it, time had passed and a janitor stuck his head in. "You kids done? I'm about to lock up the place for the night."
Flynn blinked in surprise, and then smiled at Yuri. "Looks like we overstayed our welcome, huh?"
Yuri grinned and waved a hand at the janitor. "Yeah, we'll be out in a few minutes."
The man gave a nod and backed out. It was a comfortable silence, and Flynn couldn't help himself as he pressed a key to break it. Yuri glanced over and tucked some hair that had fallen in front of his face behind his ear, stretching.
"Guess we better get going." Flynn nodded mutely and stood, stepping away from Yuri and the piano to pick up his bag.
"It was fun. Hanging out, I mean. It's still kind of a surprise that a guy like you knows such..."
"... Classy music? Yeah, not many people would think so."
Flynn shook his head slightly and hefted his bag more comfortable. After a moment, he looked kind of nervous and spoke almost hesitantly.
"Do you think we could do this tomorrow, too?"
Yuri gave him a crooked smile, but shrugged. "You wanna be questioned on why you're hanging out with a delinquent by your girlfriend?"
"Girlfriend?"
"The one with the braid."
"Sodia. She's a friend of mine, but she's not my girlfriend."
"Then you're free." Flynn ran a hand through his hair, but nodded.
"What does this have to do with hanging out?"
"I'm here everyday afterschool."
Flynn grinned a little, and Yuri mirrored it. "Then... Maybe you could let me sign you up to be in the talent show this year? We could do a duet," he added when he saw the look Yuri shot him. After a moment of thinking, the pianist nodded.
"Sure, why not. Piano?"
"I'm not sure I'm fit for it. You'll be on the piano, and I'll play my viola."
"Fine by me. So, when is it anyways?"
They left the soom together, first talking about the contest and ended up learning more about each other than they thought they could at first when they'd reached Yuri's dorm, Flynn bidding him a good night and it being returned as he started towards his own dorm. Flynn was thankful his roommates were out partying as he sat down on his bed and pulled a book out from under it, blowing off the cover gently as he hummed the piece he'd heard as he walked down those halls to see who had played so beautifully, only to be surprised when he found the troublemaker of the university instead of the good student he'd been expecting. And he hadn't been so bad. Easy to talk to, friendly, but most of all he'd felt relaxed when he'd spoken with Yuri, a welcome surprise compared to the tenseness he'd usually face from a stranger.
It'd been nice, and Flynn couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.
