Title: Piano
Characters: Estelle Sidos Heurassien, Yuri Lowell, Flynn Scifo
Notes: Second part to the Harmony series I'm working on. This time, it's a young rich girl who steps out of her way to meet the mysterious piano-virtuoso she's heard so much about, and she's not disappointed.
She and Flynn first met while at a concert, he playing the viola and her, surprisingly, the bassoon. He asked for her name afterwards and she smiled, introducing herself as Estellise Sidos Heurassien. He gave her such a low bow he nearly toppled over, and she couldn't help but laugh a little, apologizing for her rudeness. Within the first months of their friendship Estellise learned many things about him, and about the mysterious pianist he'd made friends with through the year. Finally she stood at the gates of the university they attended, nervous but excited, and strode into the office to get her schedule... and to meet Flynn at the café on campus.
Instead of heading towards the café, she felt herself being pulled to the music department instead. When she stepped into the building, she felt the air change and with it came the sound of a few notes playing. Practice notes. Soft, unsure, but growing more confident. Estellise makes her way through the building, ignoring the chatter of the students that pass by and heading to the room the sound came from, a plaque above the door barely catching her notice before she stepped in - Strings.
Two people sat at the piano in the room, one playing a few notes and the other following after. After a moment Estellise realized who it was and smiled. So, this was the mysterious pianist Flynn spoke so fondly of at times. He was teaching another student, younger than him, how to play; How kind-hearted! After a moment of playing, the dark-haired man looked up at her and gave her a grin, silencing the pupil's keys with a swift hand.
"You lost?"
Estellise shook her head, smiling. "No, I was just wondering who was playing." And to the student, "You'll be a great pianist one day." The boy grinned and shook his head, sticking a thumb out at the man beside him.
"No way, Yuri's the best pianist! No one can beat him when it comes to playing this old thing-- Hey!" He was cut short by Yuri giving him a quick noogie before letting him go.
"Get some lunch kid, we'll start up again soon."
The kid nodded and grabbed his bag, running out with a wave to Estellise. She stood at the doorway silently, studying him intensely. Yuri stared back, then patted the open seat beside him.
"You said you wanted to listen, right? Sit down." She let a grin slip and quickly sat down on the bench, loving the way the wood pressed into her legs. It was so fantastic! His next question threw her off. "What's your name, anyways?"
"Oh, how rude. Um, my name is Estellise Sidos Heurassien. It's very nice to meet you, Yuri." She said with a polite bow of her head, hands clasped tight on her lap. He looked amused for a moment, then turned to the piano.
"Estellise, huh? Alright. Ever seen someone play upclose?"
"Oh-- No! I've only seen it from afar. Playing the bassoon doesn't really get you close to it during practice."
That got her a look. "You, a basson player?"
"Why? Is something wrong with that?"
"Nah, I just thought you looked more like a flute person." He turned back to the piano, practically carressing the keys with his fingers. "Why the bassoon?"
"The one I play is a Baroque Bassoon. It has a very earthy sound to it! It's lovely." She clasped her hands of her heart this time, and Yuri laughed at her expression.
"I'd like to hear it sometime."
"Really!?"
"Yeah, I don't know many bassoon...ists. So it'd be interesting." He gave Estellise a warm smile that reminds her faintly of Flynn, and that jogged her memory of what she wanted to ask.
"You're Flynn's friend, right?"
He looked surprised, but it changed to amusement after a moment. "You know him? Man, I knew the guy was popular but..."
"Yes. We've been friends for a few months now, corresponding through mail. He's told me much about you."
"All good things?"
"He told me to be on my guard if I ever met you."
"... Sounds just like him. He's not even here and he's already taken another girl for himself."
Despite his words, Yuri smiled and played a few notes, drawing her attention back to the old piano. "Anything you want me to play?"
"No, please play whatever you want. I'm happy enough to listen."
Yuri sat a bit straighter and positioned his hands carefully, playing with practiced ease. A gentle tune that soothed her nervousness and let her relax. Played so skillfully she couldn't tell where one song ended and when the next began. When she began to lean against him, a smile on her lips and a yawn escaping embarrassingly, he stopped and tapped her.
"Hey, you awake? If you want to meet up with him, you better be quick. He doesn't like late people."
She sat up and flushed a bit, twisting the edge of her skirt slightly. "Thank you for playing for me, Yuri." Estellise stood and walked briskly for the door, stopping when she heard his voice.
"It's nothing. Tell him I said hey, alright Estelle?" Estelle. It was strange, having a nickname, but she nodded.
"I will. I hope we can meet again soon!"
"You and Flynn are perfect for each other." Light pink. "You're both so formal. Relax a little, alright?" It was the smile that made her turn a little red.
"Y-yes... Um, good-bye!"
As soon as she closed the door behind her, Estelle breathed a sigh of relief and heard the piano start up again, the same piece from before. After a moment of listening, she began her journey back towards the outside and to find the café. Flynn stood waiting at the door, and he smiled when he saw her.
"Lady Estellise." A bow. "Did you meet him?"
"Yes, but how did you know?"
"He's usually in the Strings room at this time, and one of his students told me he'd seen a pretty, pink-haired lady at the door."
"He really is a wonderful player."
"He is. I just wish he'd use that talent for something, it's such a waste to hide it." Flynn let out a frustrated sigh, and then he straightened up. "My apologies, Lady Estellise, please don't mind me."
He hid it, hm? That was a shame. But Estelle smiled and let him lead her inside. "After lunch, will you show me around?"
"Of course. But I must warn you," he lowered his voice as they found a seat, "there's a certain rumor that's going around at the moment."
She leans closer and lowers her voice as well. "What do they say?"
"They say that you shouldn't visit the music hall after dark. It's haunted."
