After speaking to my family and friends, weighing the pros verses the cons, and just generally mulling it over quite a bit, I finally came to a decision. It was a tough one, but I hope that in the end it's worth it.
That's right. I bought myself a second laptop for work.
Yeah, no headway whatsoever on that other decision. Still split 50/50. I'm going to stop here lest I start ranting in circles again.
Anyway, about the laptop. It's a
Frontier Atom Mini Notebook, a brand-new model from Frontier (a Korean company) that debuted early last month. I've actually had my eye on it before then along with a bunch of other models because I've wanted a work laptop for a long time. I currently have a laptop, but Yojimbo is huge, heavy, and has zero battery life. He's also plugged into a million things here at home (speakers, DVD burner, external hard drive, and various other USB hardwares). In short, taking him anywhere is a pain in the butt. He may as well be a desktop for all his portability.
I feel like a computer is essential to doing my job comfortably. I use the Internet to study Japanese, keep up on world news, look up lesson ideas, print flashcards, and make games for class. I use a word processor to write monthly newsletter articles (in Japanese), make worksheets, and print fax messages (my Japanese handwriting is just awful). My job basically revolves around a computer. It doesn't have to; a lot of ALTs don't use a computer at all, but I do. I happen to be very computer-savvy and so using one makes my job so much easier, less stressful, and, frankly, more fun.
Now free from the dreadful staff computers at school, I have my very own. Continuing my tradition of naming all my electronics after Final Fantasy summons, I've named him
Moogle. (Yes, Moogles were an official summon in Crisis Core, so I'll have none of your "Moogles aren't real summons!" crap.) It wasn't a hard decision at all because he's white, tiny, and sometimes says stuff I don't understand. He's smaller than a sheet of paper and weighs around two pounds with the battery in. Talk about portability. And he was really quite cheap for his size and specs. Sony's Vaio TT, at a similar size (albeit with a ton of bells and whistles,) starts at over $2,000!
Well if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play with my new toy business purchase. Figuring out Windows in Japanese is half the fun!
