Why?

Sep 12, 2011 19:43

I find that "why?" is the question I ask most often when I see bad flags. "Why did you do that?" "Why does he have all these powers?" "Why did you feel the need to list seventeen theme songs?" And that's the case with these flags, too. A whole lot of "why?"

WHY )

stupid emotes, butthurt, draenei, growth potion, demon in disguise, yer doin it wrong, pretty princess, wyrmrest accord, scars, ow my retinas, lore crushing, horrible relative, look at me, funny story, flagrsp, scarlet crusade, terreble evil, you make me sic, half-elf, lolwhut, dragon in disguise, wankery, worgen, ruined forever, freaky hybrid, death knight, emo bullcrap, demon

If it doesn't walk like a duck, look like a duck, or quack like a duck...

The other day I was chortling about the idea of someone trying roleplay a "tauren" being allowed into Stormwind because "part of a neutral faction, guys!" Surely no one would be silly enough to try it?

Welp, that was fast.

Well, t'be fair, wasn't there a Darkspear envoy in Stormwind during patch 4.1?

And really, blood elves have been RPing in Silvermoon as "high elves" for AGES now, without even bothering with "neutral faction," just with an "I'm that special and I have this special commendation from the kingdom that proves you can't kill me on sight".

Yes, and she's stuck at the edge of the harbor on her little boat, surrounded by wary guards prepared to chop her in two if she makes a funny move. Stormwind isn't fond of its exotic emissaries.

Hah, fair enough. XD I was wondering why I'd never seen her on my Alliance toons.

Unfortunately, the answer to about 85% of those "why" questions is either "so I can be special" or "because I think I am smarter/better than every other RPer in this game, and they benefit somehow from my behavior".

I don't even. *facedesk*

The thing is, you're right -- almost every plot that someone does with a completely lore-shattering character could easily be done within lore with ten minutes of thought. In fact, most plotlines that people import wholesale from other properties could also be done efficiently and cleverly within WoW lore with about ten minutes of thought.

Look, if my guild's Vent channel can change one rule, add one character, and make the entirety of the Star Wars prequels make sense both as a story AND with the original trilogy within a half-hour long conversation... you can spend five minutes on Wowpedia understanding the background of your chosen race and adjusting your concept to fit.

I think that's probably what bothers me the most. You can play out the exact story you want within lore 99% of the time. If you're interested in exploring the nuances of a halfbreed coping with a culture that doesn't accept him or her, why not make them a half elf that doesn't brag about it and was born in Dalaran? If you want a scarred, plate-wearing badass, why not make a warrior who can dual-wield? It just drives me kind of crazy... you don't have to go outside of the lore created for this game or paint yourself as sooper speshal in order to play an interesting character, and honestly, people flock more to RP that's done well and within the boundaries of lore than sooper speshal stuff.

Why are your eyes "blood redd"?

The extra D is for Dreadfull.

And now I am thinking of it as a Harry Potter exam and that's more fun.

She was a joy, truly. I felt bad because she did seem kind of new, but To For fill her desstiny just made me giggle wayyyyy too much.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that went into a laughing fit when reading that.
