31 DAYS OF BLOGGING: XXIX - Where have you travelled?

Nov 29, 2013 23:51

In a vague order for you;

Mexico, when I was very young. Think 10-11ish, I went with my then-Episcopalian church (I think the second one, the one not belonging to my rector God Father/Uncle figure) to paint churches across the boarder.

When I was eighteen I went to Australia over Christmas, three months after 9/11, as the only person who stayed in the trip from my HS. Everyone else dropped out because of 9/11, but I had spent a year and half saving for this trip, and had gotten scuba diving lessons, and by god I was going. It was probably the worst trip of my life until I told my chaperone teacher I was going to spend days alone doing what I wanted not what she wanted.

When I was twenty, I went to Alaska three times over a year and half to visit my first roommate who had been stationed there with her husband. We went for winter, summer, winter. It was glorious. There were moose in the streets, baby earth quakes, and the sun never sets on summer solstice.

When I was twenty-one or twenty-two I accompanied my best friend of the time to Canada where I was a guest at her sisters wedding, and then spent the next week (two weeks?) enjoying the beauty of touring Quebec and Montreal.

When I was twenty-six, I moved to Seoul, South Korea and lived there, alone, for a year and half. I spent that whole year traveling South Korea between two and four weekends a month. Going to everything my tour group offered for weekend trips. While there I, also, went to North Korea, Jeju Island and the disputed Dokdo Island/Lincourt Islands.

I've been all over the US. It'd be hard to even tell you where I've been. It's usually so much easier to point out places on the map I haven't been. My fathers family lives in California, across that coast. My boss and a past ex-lived in Oregon. My mother's family lives Michigan through Maine, and I've been in all those states for Christmas and skiing (plus skiing in New Mexico).

I've done long road trips from here to California, Oregon, and Minnesota. I used to drive from here to Alabama and Mississippi for Holidays with the first boyfriend I lived with. I've had two trip to New Orleans already, which is one of the cities I think I will love until I die. Trips to Denver, Chicago, Boston. Several camping/hiking trips all over Texas with Billy's parents.

I've also done a road trip from New York City to Kansas (which I'd already been to for visiting a best friend there several times). Doing my first trip to New York backwards and seeing it after living in Seoul for a year and half, I will never be able to get over how small New York City is (and I always make an odd face when people tell me how big it is, because it really isn't by comparison). We saw Niagara on that trip, too.

I've lived in the Carolinas and DC while my father was stationed when I was very young. I do Georgia every year for Dragon Con. I go wherever the wind blows me. I love new places. It's one of the things that's hit me hardest since coming home from Korea. I traveled so much that year, and all my travel has been continental since getting back. So it's a massive bright shiny star thing I plan to get back to once I have a real job again.
