Superpowers, Ms Tree and Joker Got Awaaay...

Alex Ross' follow-up to the paen to the Silver Age Justice will be SuperPowers for Dynamite Entertainment. He's treading on similar ground as AC Comics and Alan Moore's Terra Obscura, reimagining older public domain superheroes. Ross is providing the character designs and covers, but they haven't announced the interior artist yet. Only one woman featured in that lineup thus far, codenamed Masquerade aka Miss Masque. She has more of a Crimson Avenger-ish vibe in her character design, rather than the pinup glamour girl she's been used for in other versions. I like her better in the poster than the actual detail piece though.

If you're interested in the Batman's pulp origins, there's a Shadow reprint that'll interest you, collecting the two Shadow novels: Double Novel #9: "Lingo" and "Partners in Peril". ComicMix had two entries, including how the stories were found and DC Comics' (or Paul Levitz anyway) reaction to the information.

Speaking of nothing changes, I'm reading some issues of the old Ms Tree noir series by Max Allan Collins and Terry Beatty. Talk about a series that doesn't pull any punches. In one of the letters pages, someone complains about the two of the previous covers and how they use the old "damsel in distress" stitch. Ms Tree is anything but a push-over, so they were disappointed to see them resort to cheesecake. The letter writer appeared to be male. I wish I could say the editor understood the position. I'm still trying to find good scans of said covers to see what I think. But it was mildly ironic to read the same arguments in a 24 year old comic. For those who like Ms Tree, Hard Case Crime is publishing an original novel by Collins with a Beatty cover featuring the character in December called Deadly Beloved.
