Budapest palace of Arts

Nov 16, 2010 15:25

During our stay in Budapest hosts organized us the visit to the Budapest brand new Palace of Arts. And we were happy to visit it :))

Budapest Palace of Arts was built between 2002 and 2005 as a place were could meet and present themselves young starting and also prominent musicians, artists and other people of creative professions :) The construction costs were more than 30 million euros. The architect of the palace was Gabor Zoboki. It is interesting that palace was built using private money: it was a donation of one of the richest Hungarians (I only remember that his name is Sandor and among other businesses he owns famous Hungarian "Globus" fruits and vegetables trade mark. He also one of the construction industry tycoons in Hungary). Our Hungarian colleagues said that of course he will get back from government this money in the form of various tax releases and other ways :))) But anyway this is good example for other rich people in the region to follow :)

We just arrived. Facade of the palace. Above the main glass facade you can see terrace were you can walk and sit:

Palace from other side:

Before going inside let's look at the neighbor of the Palace - National Drama Theater. The old drama theater was built here in 1875-1893 but the building was demolished in 1963 during construction of Budapest metro. So in 1998-2002 the new national drama theater was built and it's architecture reflects the connections with the old theater:

Details of national theater facade:

Also nearby one rather strange decoration is built - pyramid. It seems that it should symbolize the tower of Babilon:

Now I am inside the Palace:

Looking from the first floor up:

Decorations which could be used as a bar:

Another decor elements having clear connection with the purpose of the palace:

Another perspective up from the first floor:

I am walking at the second floor:

Let's go in to the National Bartok concert hall - one of the best concert halls in Europe these days:

Organ in the hall (those days traditional Gustav Maller festival was carried on in Budapest so you can see Maller's portrait):

In the second and third floors you can found many such style corridors. But it was difficult to do better photos due the very contrasting lightning:

Also very dark theater hall:

Way up from second to third floor:

At the corridors of third floor:

You can find more intimate spaces:

Separated places to rest and may be to discuss:

Look down to the side entrance:

On open air terrace:

View to the national theater from terrace:

View to the other side of Danube:

The area around is actively developed:

Besides main and big concert halls the palace has many smaller halls were young performers could present themselves:

For us concert - gratis  was given by the young (and I need to say interesting) local jazz group "Half of my kingdom" (performers are Hungarian students at the world famous Vienna musical academy):

Now we leaving the palace. Modern buildings of one of the Budapest universities at the other side of the Danube:

Back to the bus:
