Miechow is not big town (about 12 thousand residents) located about 50 km to the north from Krakow. We shortly visited this town to look at the God Tomb cloister and church:
It is not so well known fact that some of the Polish nobles participated in the Crusades to the Middle East. One of such Crusaders was Jaksa, son of Henryk Sandomierski, owner of the lands were Miechow is located. After return from Palestine he took wit him Monks which represented the Order of God Tomb. In Poland they became later known as Miechowits. So the church and cloister here are old: they were established in 1163.
Today cloister complex consists from the Gothic church from XIVth and XVth centuries with the Romanic elements from the first decades of XIIIth century and cloister buildings complex from the XVIIIth century.
The most unusual part of the church for me was the tower:
What the cross decorates the dome ? ...
Interior of the church is clearly Baroque:
Baroque decorations are seen in the exterior of the church also:
Cloister complex was under the restoration and wasn't easily seen:
The town of Miechow wasn't explored thoroughly by us but it seems that it is rather typical for that country.
Square in the center:
Modern building imitating older periods that also is typical for modern construction in the older parts of Polish townships:
It's all for this report. Tomorrow I need to go to the last my big trip this year. It's time to visit my capital city :))) I will go to Brussels - capital of Europe (if Belgian air traffic controllers will not introduce some surprises ..). In the plans also visits to Ghent, Brugge, Antwerpen, Leuven. I will be back next Wednesday.
