Remoulins - township in Langedoc: the taste of real France

Oct 10, 2011 17:27

Remoulins is the small township (about 2000 residents) in the Langedoc. We didn't planned to visit this township or we ever knew something about it before. We came here completely by accident. And were happy: in this report you will get the taste of real France:

When we went to visit Pont du Gard we found that the next bus will depart only 6 hours later ...  Such perspective wasn't attractive and we decided to go to the closest bigger settlement by foot. On the direction we choose it was Remoulins...  In this township we found that we will need to wait two more hours and we used this  time to see Remoulins. And after visit we became happy that the fate gave us the opportunity to visit Remoulins :)

We went about 3 km crossing the fields of southern France. The Autumn here is time to collect the harvest: such tracks are used to collect the grapes:

Time to time you can see the urbanized landscape of France: every township and village must to have own castle ... (this is not Remoulins , the name of this township I don't know):

First views in Remoulins weren't impressive. The township had old bridge (built in 1830) which was demolished in 1995 and new bridge was built. Some parts of the old bridge were left as amonument (first I thought that this is anti-aircraft gun :))

The remnants of old bridge:

Then we walked near the Gard river and found another interesting thing - bamboo grove:

You don't believe that this bamboos ? Be sure :))

And then we decided to go further from the main motorway and found the center of Remoulins. We used this street:

Church of Remoulins - rather ordinary:

But in front is the object that each village in France must have - the former castle. This castle isn't mentioned in any tourist guides ... And even in the Internet is difficult to find info about it.

Clearly that for several centuries castle isn't used as a fortress and residential buildings were inserted around the older defensive structures. Through the gates of castle:

From other side:

Going further - another old building:

It seems that this is former church but these days it is unused:

Houses and windows near this church:

Just behind this church Remoulins ends and olive tree plantations begins:

We went back to the center but used sidestreets. And found real labyrinth of narrow medieval streets. Oh how nice was to walk along them:

Those streets needs only horses with musceteers on them and you may feel right back in the XViith century :)))

Every respectable township should have own Grand rue :)

Houses of remoulins:

Yards of Remoulins:

Somehow we managed to go back to the former castle from other side:

Then we changed the direction and went other direction:

Here you can see a lots of older buildings too:

Unexpectedly we found one more vary characteristic for the France and very exotic for us institution - local winery:

It seems that this winery exists for centuries ... In September it works very actively and we had the opportunity to observe the process from the side:

Winery:

Going further newer Remoulins begins:

Then we went back to the motorway and began to wait for the bus. Waiting we met the columns of French army on a marche. It seems that the area of Nimes is heavily militarized:

So for the consecutive time we had the opportunity to prove famous proposition that if you want to get taste of real France you need to visit smaller and non-touristic townships and villages. They are simply magnificent in this country ...
